I wrote some words for TechCrunch about how Homeland Security is using administrative subpoenas, which aren't subject to judicial oversight, to seek data from tech giants about Trump critics and anonymous accounts of ICE trackers. Featuring really great reporting by Bloomberg & Washington Post.

White House attempting a walk back of Trump's comments, but Trump himself has been very clear that he views states as "agents" of the federal government.
Q: What does President Trump mean when he says Republicans should 'nationalize voting'?

LEAVITT: What the president was referring to is the SAVE Act, which is a common sense piece of legislation Republicans have supported. It provides common sense measures for voting, such as voter ID

Tina Brown, to her credit, actually *read* newspapers and kept up on things. A lot of Americans seem to treat the news like it's another form of sports or entertainment that doesn't really involve them.

(I mean all celeb one-time visitors. I know nothing about Melinda Gates' news consumption.)
exactly. this is not difficult.

Current events are making it challenging to track MPs and reputable organisations that are permanently migrating to Bluesky. If folks see examples that we need to assess for verification - do let me know. Will limit it largely to politicians, govt orgs and large orgs at the moment for this pass.

Still thinking about this photo. The architecture of apartheid perfectly captures the mindset of apartheid's architects -- that is, its ideologues. They were, in the words of Heribert Adam, modernizing racial domination, with the dominated kept in their place and generally out of sight.

“If we’re going to say it’s OK to kill so-called terrorists in the Caribbean, for actions that have traditionally been dealt with as a criminal matter, using due process — what’s to say you can’t do the same in an American city?” asked @scanlon.house.gov

Trump Calls His Enemies Terrorists. Does That Mean He Can Just Kill Them?
From boat strikes to killings in the streets of Minnesota to NSPM-7, the White House leans on the word “terror” to justify its violence.

Or was that intended for Rebecca Spang?

Sorry, the User Interface here is often confusing to me!

That's the thing, the point of the community organizing work is to effectively protect people from ICE, not to build up anti-ICE publicity. Media exposure is a completely secondary goal that is not always compatible, something that Stancil clearly doesn't understand.

Chris Murphy names the harm plainly: ICE is inflicting trauma and violence—Minneapolis to Texas, block by block. Families terrorized. Communities destabilized. This happens by design and by funding. Congress can stop feeding it today. #FundHealthcareOverICE #Sheshed

Folks, this article was published in June 4, 2020.

@propublica.org, this article seems reasonably accurate and still useful. But, it's not a good practice to post five-year old articles without mentioning the date of publication.
Tear gas is banned in international warfare, yet classified as a “riot control agent” that law enforcement can use for crowd control.

“It just doesn’t work well, and it hits the weakest people the most, and causes the most complications in them,” an anesthesiology professor at Duke University said.
Tear Gas Is Way More Dangerous Than Police Let On
In the middle of a respiratory pandemic, law enforcement agencies have used tear gas in especially dangerous ways. The chemical agent also seeps into homes, contaminates food, furniture, skin and surf...

A record number of people are in immigration jail AND most of these detentions are probably illegal. I think a good demand is to end immigration jail. If there is nowhere to jail people, they will be forced to arrest fewer people. This scheme is working bc of warehouses full of humans.
