I feel like anytime you see this, when you actually read into it it's either
-they were invaded/a recent war had more or less already destroyed the country
-the government was actually very effective, but its goal was redistributing wealth to a small group of people

Also just on that, I may have said this before but like, it seems pretty obvious that the reason so many indigenous folk in latin america supported the conservatives in the 1800s was because, as bad as things were, the liberals stood to additionally make them homeless and trap them in debt slavery

It's also like, a lot of it is just weirdly unnecessary and often racist. Like, sometimes articles will be like "marxists have tried to rewrite history and claim that indigenous people didn't like being peasants, conveniently ignoring their support for the monarchy, natural inclination

Really funny to see spanish wikipedia just go like fully mask off and have a bunch of articles with phrases like "the marxists will try to make you believe etc." and "leftist so-called intellectuals have tried and failed to argue etc." Over the most pointless of stuff

A lot of the readings I've been doing for my little project are like primary sources, but also I check wikipedia to grab sources and also see what some folks write ups for stuff are as like a sorta half starting point. And wikipedia is pretty bad at the best of times wrt history stuff, but it's
