It's kind of both??? The greek verb odussomai actually means to hate, so there's one word that predated the name... Odysseus is hated/cursed by Poseidon, which led to all of his trials/journeys, which then gave us the story of Odysseus, which now gave us new meanings associated with his name.

I thought he was very against delaying armageddon. Isn't that literally his whole "don't immanentize the katechon" bit that he printed on shirts? Which literally means: don't bring into being the thing/institution that will hold back the antichrist from starting the final battle.

Thinking about how human cloning technology could be used to not only revive famous musical acts, but make them even better. Just imagine Crosby, Crosby, Crosby, Crosby, Stills, Stills, Nash, Young & Young

i think the key to understanding a lot of establishment discourse is that basically only the left and liberals are capable of being viewed as subjects capable of judgement which is why GOP rule is essentially treated as a force of nature

The media trots out the "deplorable" comment from a decade ago to castigate the left. Once a week now Trump implies that the military should destroy democrats, and it is just how things are.

Trump to the Navy: "We have to take care of this little gnat that's on our shoulder called the Democrats."

that's what I was thinking, except I think Ostapenko was ranked higher than Iga in their first meeting in 2019

I don't think the liberal Christian you QT would disagree with this? Their point is not like fuck the Romans, but to indict oppressive political empires (and our human tendency to create and get caught up in them) as part of the ways that humanity has sinned.

That is so beyond frustrating! I wonder if the instructor used AI to generate the syllabus, and didn't realize that the AI was pulling from your work without attribution.

I read the book! The excerpt was ill chosen. She didn't really "try to kill Rayya", never got past making a plan. She also didn't really abandon Rayya, she stepped back & re-entered her life once someone else who wasn't trapped in a cycle of enabling/codependence had helped Rayya get clean.

great news! you're not actually seeing karl rove, john yoo, and david frum criticize the administration's lawlessness more stridently than dem leadership. you, reader, were infected with rabies by a brown bat 36 hours ago and this is all just the virus working its way through your nervous system

Her account of the story on Glennon Doyle's podcast a few years ago contains 90% of the interesting material in her new book, so maybe check that out instead?

I think it's useful as self help for people with codependency or sex/love addiction, and a lot of people who liked Eat, Pray Love would like it. But it's definitely not as fleshed out or as well written as her novels.

She writes and talks about the plan as if it got further than it did, including later admitting to her partner something like "I tried to kill you," but there was really no substantial step towards putting the plan in action.

I read the book and found that the excerpts and reviews were very misleading... perhaps an attempt to create buzz/controversy? There was no attempt. There was ideation and a plan that never got put into action.

It’s also indicative of the problematic way the administration blurs the lines between elected officials and pundit, television personality, model, podcaster, etc. It positions whoever is favourable of Trump as if they have been elected democratically to officially represent or serve in office.

It’s not pedantic. It’s a response to the right treating this as if it were the assassination of an elected official via their rhetoric and lowering of the flags (incl by Dems like Josh Shapiro). This situation doesn’t require us to let the right turn him into a solemn/honored figure.

For everyone saying political violence has no place in this country…

Remember two Democratic legislators were shot in Minnesota just this year.

And America shrugged and moved on.

The president is bonding with his friend, the famous pedophile human trafficker, using a winking reference to a children’s book. Do I have that correctly

Has anybody noted that the first line in this is from the Maurice Sendak children's book Higglety Pigglety Pop?
Jennie only nodded, her mouth full of leaves. "Then why are you leaving?" "Because," said Jennie, snapping off the stem and blossom, "I am discontented. I want something I do not have. There must be more to life than having everything."

The lack of mainstream coverage of regular huge protests reminds me of a talk from a Twitter employees who explained that they had to drop BLM off the Trending Tags section because otherwise it would have been there permanently. The modern media environment has no appetite for sustained movements.
