Someone pitched this for our next book group read last night. Thankfully my pitch for Frankenstein won

Actually the only reason I remembered is because of a different 10/10 joke that just popped up in my Facebook memories 🙈

In this self-portrait by Pieter Van Laer (known as Il Bamboccio), ca. 1635–37, the artist portrays himself performing a magic ritual and, to his own horror, having summoned up some kind of demon. The sheet music has his signature and the words “il diavolo non burla” (“the devil doesn’t jest”)
"In one of the most remarkable self-portraits ever created, Pieter van Laer reacts with horror to the frightening claws of the devil that have suddenly come to claim him. Dressed in the black cloak and cap of a magician, the artist, with bulging eyes and open mouth, has witnessed this apparition while standing behind a table filled with books, some with alchemical notations, a variety of vessels, a snuffed-out candle, and a skull resting on hot coals" (Leiden Collection) https://www.theleidencollection.com/artwork/self-portrait-with-magic-scene/

My guess would be that there are possibly a lot more of them from the 18th century than you’d reasonably think, from figures more obscure than Vivaldi

Vivaldi composed 39 bassoon concertos. Some would say that this is too many bassoon concertos. I, however, say it is far too few

Without one I just couldn’t balance work/kids and would have given in and bought a car. The biggest challenge for mass take-up is everyone’s buying them through regressive Cycle to Work tax dodge. So a £5k bike costs 12 x £241 monthly payments if you’re high earner or 12 x £416 if you’re in poverty.

Electric cargo bikes can replace many everyday car trips for the average family and “reshape suburban family mobility”, say Oxford University researchers. 49 British households were loaned e-cargo bikes for school runs, shopping trips, family outings and other day-to-day use.

I’ve never read Jilly Cooper but she came in to do a signing the week I did work experience in a book shop in Basingstoke. She seemed nice (and was surprisingly small)

A few moments didn’t quite come off for me but there was lots to enjoy and overall it was a worthwhile attempt to do more than just stand up and sing (though the singing was very good). Not a concert I’ll quickly forget

Very imaginative concert from Echo Vocal Ensemble, timed around dusk. A varied programme with lighting and spatial effects to exploit the Union Chapel acoustics and create atmosphere. Dancer Jamal Sterrett was mesmerising. Would like to see more concerts as theatrical as this!
