Any other #cryoEM people have a problem with this?

The only woman of color on the board of trustees of the University of Utah was not recommended for reappointment to the board by a committee at the state legislature because she used the word “equity” twice

Rick Baker (UNC Chapel Hill) giving a great talk on Clathrin meditated transport. His group does cutting edge cryoEM and biophysics. And if you hadn't heard UNC is gearing up to install a brand new Krios. They have an Artica and....
They are hiring at all levels!

If you are interesting in developing new algorithms for #cryoEM as a #PhD student or as a #postdoc, then do email or DM me. We have exciting opportunities coming up.

Rutgers Newark is hiring multiple new profs who work in microbial pathogenesis, structural bio, human/microbial genetics, genomics, biochemistry, or computational biophysics. I loved doing my PhD at Rutgers and I LOVE New Jersey. Reach out if you’re applying and have questions about the school/area.

When you send a department email highlighting "engaging with community" but all your examples are "building communities" that are ISOLATED from the general public, you are actually segregating from the community, i.e. #FAILING as a leader and a scientist.

We have to do whatever we can to not just build a scientific community but engage the one around us. I was once a homeless high school student. If I didn't frow up in a college town, I probably wouldn't have made it very far. Those small community college professors get out into the community

High schoolers with their math and science homework and I used to show up to one's track meets. Again I carry a paper or a book. I go to farmers markets and I did teach a class once at MBU which I might try again

I sit at the bar and read 2 or 3 Saturdays a month and I always get questions. I carry around a book on ethics or biophysics and I also get questions. I volunteer at the science fairs. I have e a Truth Social account and I post simple explanations occasionally about science. I help my neighbors

Ask yourself, as a scientist with federal funding, why are you only here on bluesy hiding from the public. Why aren't you reaching out to the public. If you're only on here, you're part of the problem just as much as Trumo is. Get back into the public

Support a great cause and get totally scientific, politically correct (?, was politically incorrect a few years ago) 🤔
Either way! support the fight!

We have a preprint of a book chapter for you: Structural Analysis of Membrane Proteins in Cell-Derived Microvesicles.

We describe how to image membrane proteins in mid-sized vesicles using cryo-electron tomography

Trump:No data, no problem!
When the Trump administration said last week that it would stop requiring thousands of industrial facilities to report their planet-warming pollution, the move fit a growing pattern: If data points to a problem, stop collecting the data.

Reflecting on Charlie Kirk's assassination, the hosts of "Hard Fork" discuss freedom of speech and the terrifying new reality of extremely online violence. nyti.ms/4nknwq8
"You really do not wanna live in a country where the people — the comedians on TV — cannot make fun of the president. Like that is rarely a sign of a healthy democratic society." - Kevin Roose, co-host of "Hard Fork"

The Geology Club went on a float down the James River this afternoon. ⚒️
Talon smiles in sunglasses and a broad brimmed hat from one boat while two students in kayaks smile in the background A half dozen kayaks and a canoe in front of a cliff of rock A student floats in the river in a kayak, and the river reflects the Blue sky above. There are trees on either Bank

...in the way Charlie Kirk did -without so much anger and hostility. Was there aggressive speech from him and did he get angry? Absolutely! But he invited conversation. He spoke mostly politely and forward, and he showed up to where the public was. Go to the public. Dont hide here on bsky
schiracha.bsky.social
The reason there wasnt an outcry for other killings the way there was for Charlie Kirk was not that such person was liberal and he was conservative. Its that people knew who he was. He was outspoken. He was well spoken. He reached out to the public. Trumps rampage aside. More libs need to reach out
