A great talk by @ginnybraun.bsky.social on GenAI and qualitative analysis. Can GenAI do reflexive TA? The short answer is no - reflexive TA is a human practice. Should we use GenAI as qualitative researchers given all the harms of the tech? If you're remotely concerned with social justice ... no???

Here's a talk I gave as a keynote for the BPS @qmip.bsky.social conference (July 2025) - the result of @vicclarke.bsky.social & I recognising we needed to "dive in" & grapple with the beast that is GenAI & qualitative/(reflexive) thematic analysis

After a week off and a great deal of reflection, I’ve decided that, moving forward (particularly for the 2025/26 academic year), I’m going #AIfree

I will be making this experiment my entire personality, by not applying AI in my teaching, research, and personal life.

Should I document this here?

Great thread by @ipanalysis.bsky.social on AI and qualitative analysis (and other things). I remain completely baffled about the enthusiasm for using AI to do qualitative analysis and (reflexive) TA specifically... not least because it is profoundly unethical, exploitative, eco disaster technology

Uncharacteristcally long 🧵 (sorry) re: #Qualitative methodologies, science, and 'AI'.

As Qualitative researchers, we should definitely care and remain curious about what 'good work' can look like - but we should be very wary about assuming that a focus on 'rigour' will address this question. 1/13

For those of you who don't know, DMU is currently proposing mass redundancies, with nearly 100 academic staff 'at risk', sadly including me. It is absolutely brutal.

Please spread the word about this protest rally happening next week in Leicester and come and support us if you're able. #DefendDMU

Engagement from our students is deeply encouraging: we are fighting these cuts because staff working conditions are student learning conditions. #DefendDMU

Is anyone else experiencing AI fatigue while marking? I am so tired of seeing the same generic writing over and over - I miss the typos and the messiness!

Close to TWO THOUSAND academics and educators say TRANS RIGHTS NOW.

(Sorry if you've seen this (and the historians' letter!) too many times. The lack of an algorithm means we have to keep reposting it to catch people, and this really matters.)
carolinepennock.bsky.social
Heartened to see that close to 900 fellow academics and educators have already signed our letter in support of trans rights, trans wellbeing & trans inclusion, and against essentialist, anti-scientific, racialised & regressive views of womanhood. Please do read, share & sign! tinyurl.com/mud7va29

“Research into sexuality and gender is vital for identifying social, cultural, and medical needs of populations, and addressing inequalities across populations.”

It’s good to see editors of academic journals refuse to comply with increasing state censorship of sexuality and gender scholarship.

Trans communities are devastated by today’s ruling. Instead of bringing clarity, the Supreme Court has made a ruling which appears to contain a number of contradictions. The intent seems clear: to exclude trans people from society.

Trans women are women. And gender/sex is far from binary.

JKR randomly going after asexual people for no reason just reiterates how silly it is to claim that spending 24/7 attacking trans people on the internet is actually just "protecting women." Who on earth are you protecting from the ace people, Joanne???

Pleased to see my sexuality and gender scholar peers (as editors) taking this stance, and challenging the political encroachment on academic freedom under the current US Administration.

My grants were terminated.
cbv.bsky.social
I have heard of so many LGBTQ+ grants terminated today. I am so sorry to everyone affected. This is devastating to our communities and to us as researchers. I have nothing more eloquent, comforting, or helpful to say. This is all just immeasurably horrible.
