Sunday flashbacks: as we continue the "good trouble" resistance with solidarity and solid reporting, I take a breath each week to a more carefree time (Nixon/Ford?!) - sharing from my adolescent hobby of collecting celebrity photos.

Also reminiscent of the remark to FEMA director after Katrina - except this time it's "Brownie-nose, you're doing a heck of a job"

He sent this photo in 1974 o4 75. Bold signature. But as a kid, I was thrilled when celebs inscribed it with my name. It felt more personal (ha!) José Ferrer didn't do that, but as a bonus here is the envelope that I am guessing he addressed himself. That feels like a personal touché (a la Cyrano!)

75 years later we may not understand how deeply McCarthyism hysteria especially impacted lives & livelihoods of performers of color. Or, maybe we do, given current attacks by fed officials, agencies, military on Brown/Black people. José Ferrer sustained an illustrious career for nearly 60 years.

He fought against segregation in DC, attended “crisis” meetings on atomic energy & foreign policy, & signed a letter in 1947 condemning the HUAC investigations & blacklist as “morally wrong.” Less defiant when called to testify himself in 1951 (he claimed naivety, some speculated he named others).

Saludos de Enero to a globally renowned multitalented Puerto Rican artist – long before Bad Bunny: José Ferrer born on 1/8. Inaugural Tony winner (‘47) & first Hispanic best actor Oscar (‘50) for Cyrano de Bergerac + many acting/directing/writing awards & noms. Early supporter of progressive causes.

And it will be tough to give up on Star Trek. But if they are going to go all mirror universe, time for the escape pods.

Just appreciate how the Obama’s mixed marriage has endured - he’s a Sox fan, she’s a Cubs fan.

All Quiet On The Western Front will enter public domain January 1. See it again, or for the first time, through Internet Archives, Hoopla (public library service), etc. Remember the message of this film, and that of Lew Ayres, who went from playing Dr. Kildare to being a medic who dared not to kill.

He arrived under fire to set up evacuation hospitals, donated all military pay to the Red Cross, and was awarded three battle stars. He returned to a steady on screen career, but never again attained the peak of his early stardom. He sent this photo in early 1976 when I knew him as a tv guest star.

The first Dr. Kildare in 30s/40s, funny in Cukor’s Holiday (1938), an ape in Battle For (1973). More so an artist who lived his values of peace & humanity as Conscientious Objector during WWII in face of public outcry. Served as medic/chaplain's asst in the Pacific, caring for soldiers & civilians.

Remembering Lew Ayres born 117 years ago. He made an immediate, indelible impact in All Quiet On The Western Front (1930), the 1st major media cry for pacifism. Oscar-nom for Johnny Belinda (1948), groundbreaking in its treatment of rape & bigotry. Later the thoughtful VP in Advise & Consent (1962)…
