Another level of meta, leads playing themselves & pastiches of Shatner, Nimoy/Stewart, etc? Per IMDB: Of working with Tim Allen, Alan Rickman wrote in his diary, "[He] has this perverse need to needle, antagonise, provoke, demoralise. Takes every opportunity to belittle." Kind of adds to it, right?

Appreciate your takes and not letting BOAN / Griffith off the hook. I posted about Lillian Gish with ref back to your discussion but may not yield the intended results due to Boomer ineptitude on bluesky.

Separate art / artists? Accountability for all? Higher standards in current age of instant information?
Bowling Green State U. removed Gish sisters name from its Theatre in 2019. 50 film-industry figures including Helen Mirren, James Earl Jones, Martin Scorsese petitioned to restore it. Thoughts?

In 1973 I had only seen Lillian Gish's "sound" roles (especially Duel In The Sun). Years later I learned more about her early acclaim as First Lady of the Screen & accolades by AFI, AllMovie, etc. – but also how she fiercely defended Griffith, & did not critically reevaluate BOAN & her lead role.

8-7 outranks 6-7! Yesterday I accompanied an 87-year old neighbor on her errands (bus, walking). She lived through the Japanese-American internment.

I didn’t want him to be embarrassed & humiliated by ignorant folks like you. You say you love Rochester. You’ll walk ten miles to see him perform. But you won’t sit down at the same table & drink a glass of Coca-Cola with him. You make me sick.”

Jack played a miser, but Benny had a heart of gold.

“His expression got nasty,” Benny recalled, as the sergeant explained, “Well, sir, ah come from a part of the country where we don’t sit down with nigras.” [sic] “I thought so, young man,” Benny replied, “and that’s why I didn’t bring Rochester on this trip.

One anecdote illustrates Jack's belief in human rights: Years after the War, Benny remembered playing at a camp in Abadan, Iran, when he encountered a white sergeant disheartened that Anderson was not in the show. Benny asked if the sergeant would ever want to sit at the same table as Anderson.

The highlight of Jack’s limited film career was To Be Or Not To Be (1942), one of the best all-time anti-Nazi/antifa messages. He was a pioneer in elevating actor of color Eddie “Rochester” Anderson to co-star of his radio & tv shows, despite the vile influence of racism in the Jim Crow era.
