In this fight we find ourselves in—the struggle for independence in the modern age—, we need to fearlessly push back against all market concentration wherever it arises.

I wrote an essay from the heart and mind about independence and the current state of culture industries.

Dove Ellis is a major talent who we recently named one of Stereogum’s 40 Best New Artists Of 2025. The Irish singer/songwriter plays swooning sophisti-pop with soaring vocals reminiscent of Rufus Wainwright and Jeff Buckley, and tonight he made his NYC debut at Main Drag.

I know a lot of you were wondering if I was gonna acknowledge the 20th anniversary of the Sony BMG copy protection rootkit scandal
Happy 20th anniversary to the Sony BMG copy protection rootkit scandal, in which the company secretly installed software to hide DRM technology on CD buyers’ PCs. XCP was a security risk that led to public outcry, class action lawsuits, and, 20 years ago today, a recall of dozens of album titles.

I hear you. Lede hosts many independent sites, and building a custom year nav for one column for one publisher was not realistic for launch. I will look into solutions, but in the meantime there is a standard reverse chron list in the category page. stereogum.com/category/col...
Scott,

Are the year pulldowns coming back for the Number Ones? Or any form of navigation other than "Older" and "Newer" buttons, which for a column with hundreds of articles is a pretty useless navigation scheme?

Stereogum has been a huge supporter of Broken Record and @powergothforever.bsky.social - please consider giving them your money
For years, advertising has been how Stereogum made money to pay its writers. While we made progress moving away from that model, Google AI search has decimated the business almost overnight. Today we relaunch with a greater focus on subscription. We’d love your support: stereogum.com/2478838/ster...
