Chapter 14
A Delicate Question

Slender can’t pick out any thought patterns. There are thirty people on the dockside, and others on board the two ships. A few more people are standing by the stores and by the main gate. There’s simply too much noise on the wavelengths.

However, she can see that MickeyWarr is concentrating on something, though she has no idea what. Probably an escape plan, or at least a skiving plan, a plan to avoid working aboard either ship. That’s the sort of thing that the smart people think about.

It's more like a large chunky chapter, which I will split across 2 or 3 chapters

CandiCrush

A senior officer in the Garrison, Commander Crush is 33 years old and shares her time between naval duties on fully rigged sailing ships, and army duties at Lancaster HQ.

Charming and courteous, and somewhat attractive she’s lovely, but she will not tolerate disorder.

Incredibly efficient, she runs a tight ship, with a place for everything and everything in its place.

A skilled horse rider, CandiCrush joined the Garrison rather than the Constabulary, because the Garrison has more horses! As a youngster all she wanted to do was ride. Now she wants to rule by diplomacy not might. She’s a firm believer is using wise words, and technology, to maintain peace, and law and order.

As a result, CandiCrush is well respected, and her opinion is highly valued. She’s open minded yet also highly focussed, and that means that some people delight in her friendship whilst others find her a little bit distant.

The ship’s umbilical manifested itself as a new corridor branching out of its spine. In that brightly-lit tube, right angles became round, rough fuselage became smooth, and the whole thing moved, gentle, like how Yana imagined a sea vessel might. She was no stranger to the feeling of nausea that came with walking down passages like this, but this time, she contended with something other than a wobbling walkway: the smell.
The unique aroma of Deep Space Outpost Bayinnaung, District B bid her welcome even before she caught her first glance of the place. It smelled of iron filings and exotic spices, of sweat and fire, of mycofuel residue spreading through recycled air. It clung to the inside of her lungs like smoke.

MarshMallow Time

The team of Wolfies is rather happy too. Two adolescent female wolves as a result of two short trips to see their neighbours. Above all, CandiCrush is particularly pleased. This looks like a first step towards putting diplomatic accords in place. A trade agreement is a good start.

Ultimately she wants more involvement with the Pennites. Hopefully they’ll be a good ally, both in commerce and in military affairs. They don’t have a Garrison or a Constabulary in the usual sense, but they use a system of local Magistrates and Minute Men. It’s an unusual territory too. Vast, barren and sparsely populated. Notionally controlled from York, but every district and every town has a great deal of autonomy.

Right now KristalClear has no idea what’s going on and she wants Conning to explain the whole background to the llama story.

So far, her demi-psychic powers haven’t worked on the human wavelength, but right now a bit of extra insight would definitely help. Especially when people like Conning start talking in riddles.

Determined to remain calm and polite, KristalClear looks directly at Conning, narrows her eyes, and lightly pushes her tongue into her left cheek, then ventures a suggestion.

“Two things,” says KristalClear, “are they alongside St George’s Quay right now, can I go and try talking to them? And, it’s the first time I’ve ever heard of people shipping llamas, what’s that all about?”

After no more than two seconds of conversation, KristalClear is already embarrassed! Not only do her parents style themselves the French way, her mother already seems to be fawning over “David” the new boyfriend.

NutJob is thinking to himself, “nobody calls me David anymore. They did when I was little. Then, they started calling me Dave, but nowadays even my friends and the teachers call me NutJob."

The French Pirate

KristalClear’s father runs a store in town “Troyes & Co Chandler of Equestrian Wares”. Henri Troyes started work as an apprentice saddle maker, became a GuildMaster, and did that for many years.

It was heavy duty work.

In order to ease the discomfort in his hands he then moved into retail, selling saddlery, tack, boots and clothing. However, he can’t stop himself from fiddling with bits of hardware, making little repairs to things, and tidying up some of the secondhand goods which find their way into his shop.
