And now #TRAVEL: Posts related to American history found in my traveling.
The dark wood and lack of natural light give the house a distinct foreboding feel, a contrast to the often whimsical appearance of its famous white haired resident. Ghost tours are available too… as the home is allegedly haunted!
The home still stands today as a monument to the great American author. Guided tours bring visitors through the grand dining room, library, billiards room, and elsewhere. Interior design work by Louis C. Tiffany & Co. can be admired in the entrance hall.
The Twain family left Hartford amidst financial troubles in 1891. They held onto the home and had plans to return, until daughter Susy died there in 1896. The Clemenses never returned.
During this time, Twain also struck up a relationship with the ailing Ulysses S. Grant, former Civil War General and President of the United States. Twain published Grant’s memoirs, which provided royalties to support Grant’s widow.
During their years in Hartford, the Clemens’ raised 3 daughters: Susy, Jean, & Clara. Twain was also busy writing notable works such as: The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876), The Prince and the Pauper (1881), Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1884), & A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court (1889).
#TRAVEL Born in Missouri & raised along the Mississippi River, Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain) found himself amongst the yankees of New England as an adult. In 1873, Twain & his wife Olivia Clemens developed plans for a home in Hartford, CT, where his publisher & other literary luminaries lived.

Every time the former first couples get together, Bush and Obama go viral, as when Bush greeted Obama with a belly tap at the funeral of President Jimmy Carter, or when Obama quipped that he and Bush behaved “just barely” at the second inauguration of President Donald Trump.

The second floor of the home even includes an exhibit dedicated to President Lincoln, complete with his iconic stovepipe hat!

Hildene still stands as a memorial to the Lincoln family, complete with formal gardens, walking trails, & a working farm. Visitors can peek into rooms all throughout the house while they listen to the sounds of organ music piped throughout (an eccentric gift of Robert’s to his wife, Mary).
Robert conducted work for the Pullman Company out of his summer home but also found time for recreation. He was fond of golf, & President William Howard Taft visited him at the home. Robert passed away at Hildene in 1925, & his wife Mary continued to enjoy the property until her death in 1937.
#TRAVEL Hildene, the Lincoln family home in Manchester, Vermont, was established by President Abraham Lincoln’s son Robert Todd Lincoln in 1905. Hildene gets its name from the hill upon which the home sits overlooking the dene (a valley with a stream).
Rubio was right about Trump in 2016. His assessment in 2021 was correct as well, as political violence continues. In spite of this, Rubio now serves as Trump’s Secretary of State.
As soon as he returned to power in 2025, President Trump did “pay the legal bills” of his supporters by pardoning the nearly 1,500 rioters who stormed the Capitol on January 6. He has continually called these violent people “patriots.”
