The first official pardon of a turkey occurred in 1989, when George H.W. Bush said his turkey “will not end up on anyone’s dinner table.”

But when Toy Story premiered in November 1995, it broke box office records, and under the leadership of Catmull, Lasseter, and Jobs, Pixar became a household name.

Over the years, SAG was pitted against studios to improve compensation and benefits for actors; fought accusations of Communist Party infiltration; members were under the microscope of J. Edgar Hoover’s FBI; and it grappled with residuals for actors whose films began airing on TV.

During this time, Twain also struck up a relationship with the ailing Ulysses S. Grant, former Civil War General and President of the United States. Twain published Grant’s memoirs, which provided royalties to support Grant’s widow.
