I remember seeing Nikki Giovanni speak many many years ago and she said exactly this. That there's no point trying to get people to fix their hearts—make them fix their actions.

Whether there's hate in their heart is their problem, but whether there's hate in their behavior, well, now that's mine.

A couple years ago I was talking to a trans friend who was worried that people only didn't misgender him because they were scared of getting criticized.

I was like, "Who cares why people treat you decently? Just be glad they're doing it." If people have hate in their hearts, I'd rather not see it.
