A damning new report by ProPublica finds that the Harrell administration deliberately kept shelter beds vacant, leaving people who needed them on the streets & the rest of us on the hook for the tab ($4,200/mo per room).

We need leadership that takes our housing affordability challenges seriously.

NEW: After paying for hotel rooms to shelter homeless people, Seattle deliberately left them vacant.

By the end of 2024, taxpayers were spending $4,200 a month per empty room at a time when thousands of residents were without a roof over their heads.
Seattle Spent Millions on Hotel Rooms to Shelter Unhoused People. Then It Stopped Filling Them.
Early last year, the city signed a $2.7 million lease extension to continue using a hotel’s rooms as shelter space. Yet despite committing to pay the rent, the city stopped sending people there.

📣 ACTION ALERT

SDOT is trying to remove a bus lane in Capitol Hill as soon as this weekend, as just announced without any public outreach. 😱

We need fast buses! Sign the petition by Transit Riders Union to keep the bus lane.

Fast transit + Abundant Housing = Livable Cities

I was just as shocked with the news about the route 2 bus only lane as you. We are working on it. We need to prioritize pedestrian safety and not go backwards on our transit investments.

Another example of the "two Seattles" exclusion that has persisted since the founding of our city.

Local officials protecting the wealthiest homeowners from having to live near the rest of us.

Has anyone seen the results of this survey?

Maybe we should Public Records Act request it?
ericacbarnett.bsky.social
He says he based his amendments on talking to people who currently live in these neighborhoods and looking at the results of an online survey.

Amazing!

It's abundantly clear that our city wants more homes and home options. To get a majority of commenters at a City Council meeting (notorious for NIMBY speeches) is astounding.

Nice job showing up everyone! 👏😍

Ironically, it's the cars that make our neighborhoods so loud -- which are owned by a much fewer share of renters than homeowners.
ericacbarnett.bsky.social
Ultimately, the argument for "quiet," "quaint" neighborhoods occupied entirely by car-based house owners is that cities are bad and Seattle shouldn't be a city. Cities have places to go, people on the street, opportunities to encounter people who aren't in your nuclear family. They want suburbs.
seattleyimby.bsky.social
Yes, all the amendments are fair game to discuss!

Good map to show my personal view that the only US metro areas pursuing serious urbanization recently has been Seattle—besides the already-super-dense NYC MSA, it's the only one that's significantly densified over the last 20 years. DC, Boston, and Portland can get honorary mentions though
