I share about walking, biking, great cities, & progressive politics.

I work for @sngreenways.bsky.social (Seattle's walking, biking, and streets for people nonprofit), but these are my personal opinions.

👋🏻 new followers. I’m Gordon and my day job is Executive Director of Seattle’s walking and biking nonprofit @sngreenways.bsky.social. Most of my content is specific to Seattle, and mostly about street infrastructure.
Honored to be asked, and happy to help in any way I can!

Is Portland finally getting its walking and biking mojo back? I hope so. We used to look to Portland for inspiration... but it's been a minute. A spirit of friendly competition between West Coast cities helps everyone strive to achieve more.

Hopefully, this isn't going to ruin anyone's holiday but I'm happy the Seattle City Council passed this Statement of Legislative Intent ordering SDOT to say how they are going to implement the Shared Streets Law SB 5595. It's due on New Years Day!

We will do a 2,500 page environmental review on a new highway that we know will lead to more traffic, and then rule out a bus lane with analysis that is done on the back of a napkin.
Idk what stage this is at, but it was eye opening when we prodded about the Route 8 study (which SDOT took as fact) but it just counted cars in 2 lanes then multiplied delay by two for adding a bus lane. No factoring in of mode shift, alternate routes, etc. I'd imagine that's what WSDOT is doing too

London is becoming a cycling city.

As we continue to expand London’s cycle network, the number of daily bike trips is soaring. Cycling has risen by more than 40% since 2019 to 1,500,000 trips every day.

So stupid I’m amazed some American red state didn’t try this first
A bad day for Canada, and therefore the world.

Ontario (population 16 million, 40% of the country) has passed new legislation prohibiting bike lanes that take a lane from cars.

An escalation from Bill 212, which required municipalities to get approval.
A sad day for cyclists. Bill 60 - which prohibits the conversion of motor vehicle lanes to bike lanes (or any other prescribed purpose) - has passed Third Reading this morning which will kill various cycling projects in Toronto & across Ontario. #shame #BikeTO #BikeSky #TOpoli #ONpoli #VisionZero

In the Netherlands, over 40% of rail passengers arrive by bike. Since 2012 the country has invested €400m+ to add 200,000 new bike parking spaces at stations. The result? More rail use, fewer car trips, lower congestion and emissions, better public health - and far more efficient use of urban space.
