Katie Wilson is taking on former D3 council candidate Alex Hudson's framing of "irresistibly good" public transit and making it her own.

Hudson is now on Wilson's team in the Mayor's office, and Wilson used the phrase in her speech about the 2 Line today and in last week's order on Rt 8 bus lanes.

Sound Transit’s 2 Line Will Finally Connect Across I-90 on March 28 » The Urbanist
# Eagerly awaited by transit riders, the full 2 Line connection will finally bridge Seattle and the Eastside and bring expanded train service all the way from Redmond to Lynnwood.

"While King County Metro is responsible for funding core bus service in Seattle, the agency has never taken the same responsibility for funding streetcar operations, even as it serves as the operator through a contract agreement."
As the First Hill Streetcar celebrates a decade of carrying riders, questions mount about the future of the streetcar network as a whole. With a plan to finally connect the two existing lines being declared dead, the status quo is likely not sustainable.

"This project taught another generation the meaning of the word plinth," Sound Transit boardmember Claudia Balducci joked, referring to a major cause of project delay.

In an interview just now, Balducci told me that the switch in committee assignments also took her by surprise and wasn't her first choice.

She had been in the middle of a two-year term as the system expansion committee chair.
Claudia Balducci is being replaced by Redmond Mayor Angela Birney as chair of the Sound Transit board's system expansion committee.

Balducci will not serve on the committee at all, under a proposed motion set to be considered at tomorrow's board meeting.

“‘While 75-year-long bonds can help at the margins, they don’t replace the need for sustainable revenue and a focus on designing for riders and building for further system expansion,’ Seattle Subway Board President David Scott told The Urbanist.”
With creative tools needed to get the entire Sound Transit 3 program across the finish line, Sound Transit is turning to the idea of 75-year bonds to finance light rail projects. A change to state law would need to be passed to allow bonds over 40 years.

The two Democrats who opposed the bill in committee were Tara Simmons (Poulsbo), and Darya Farivar (NE Seattle).

Simmons said she was unpersuaded by data showing a positive impact from 0.05% in countries outside the US, because those places have better public transit and universal health care.

The Washington House's community safety committee just gave the green light to a bill lowering Washington's blood alcohol threshold for a DUI to the international 0.05% standard. This bill has failed during the last three legislative sessions.

The vote was a closely divided 5-4, across party lines.
