This is a great thread, but it’s just an odd to me that this conversation KEEPS happening in Trek. It happened in the 60s with Pike’s beep chair, the 80s with Geordi’s visor, in the 2010s with another background disabled extra in Discovery. Eugenics arguments really are tedious and boring.

I have a friend who said, of Starfleet Academy, that this took them out of it - that seeing a person in a wheelchair in the 32nd century seemed unrealistic, since medicine in Star Trek "should be able to cure whatever was wrong with them."

That's not the case, for any number of possible reasons.

A free-to-play PVP shooter, Highguard had a strong launch--around 100,000 people were playing on Steam on its first day--but couldn't sustain those numbers, in ways that...look, you know what, why am I even talking about those figures, writers always do that when talking about layoffs like this, is there even much point trying to dissect the numbers of a game that took years to make, but where ‘most’ of the team gets laid off just two weeks after it came out? Loads of people are now reportedly out of a job, and whatever reasons people can offer or accept for it, none of it seems sane or sustainable.

You should treat every singeplayer videogame that releases, even the shit ones, as a gift from the Heavens themselves because it's only going to get harder and rarer for them to exist without some kind of global fundamental shift in priorities.

i'm also aware of indie shooters, i am literally making one i don't live under a rock. big budget games are important too! the size and budget of those teams create experiences we can't. Money People have effectively nixed that from the next several yrs of games, chasing impossible success. it sucks
