My eternal gripe on something that's strangely divisive is that FUPA does NOT mean "lower belly", but the pubic fat area, AKA the mons pubis. You don't need to have a larger belly to have one, either-- nor do you always get a FUPA when you're fat. Lower bellies are great! But they aren't FUPAs!!

A peek at the first quarter of something I started for #JayVikHorrotWeek ’s folk horror day that I’m not sure I’ll ever finish or post, because I am proud of it despite it all.
The fever had settled deep in Viktor's bones by the first frost, eating at the marrow like a starving thing. He felt it worst in the mornings, when the mountain air still held the bite of cold iron and his leg hollered louder than the church bell two hills over. Some days, the ache laid him flat before he could swing both feet to the floor. Other days, he could hobble about the cabin with his cane, stubbornness doing what his body could not. He used to think it punishment - maybe from God, maybe from the mountains themselves — for daring to carve out a life in between the cracks. For being halfway everything: Jewish in a holler with no synagogue for a hundred miles, a man without the kind of birthright men here understood, solitary because folks never knew what to make of him. But the land had always loved contradictions, hadn't it? Still, whether it was sickness or simple rot eating its way up through him, Viktor had no doubt he was dying. He could feel the arcane inside him thinning to threads, like the breath of some last prayer whispered while the candle guttered out. And yet, that night - when quick footsteps sounded on the path and broke into a desperate sprint — he found himself alive in a way the fever rarely allowed. "Help!" a voice gasped into the dark. "Please — please let me in!" It was near midnight, and the lantern by his bedside threw shadows long as winter nights across the walls. The wards hummed their warning under the floorboards, jittering the air like bees in a bonnet. Viktor dragged himself up with the cane, cussing the stiffness in his leg, and limped toward the door. A man stood on the far side of the yard fence - tall, wide-eyed, new to the holler and still soft around the edges in that way newcomers were before winter chewed them lean. His chest heaved like bellows, sweat sticking his shirt to him despite the cold. Jayce Talis. The man who'd bumped their town's population from 43 to 44. A man who had no business being this deep into the mountains at night. And behind him - just where the moonlight broke — the mimic watched. Viktor had seen mimics before. Everyone who lived this close to the mountains had. They were never perfect copies. They weren't meant to be. Something was always off: an extra joint where there oughtn't be, eyes too still, a face too calm for any living man. Jayce's copy was worse. The thing wore Jayce's shape like someone had molded him out of river clay and forgotten to smooth the places where fingers pressed. Its mouth curled too wide. Its shoulders sloped as though hung by some hook in the sky. Viktor felt the truth before he understood it: the creature stared at Jayce the way a grave stares at a corpse. "You can't stay out there," Viktor said, pushing the window open just enough to speak. His breath fogged the gap. "Not with that thing on your heels." Jayce shook like a leaf in storm winds. "I didn't know where else to go. Nobody in town would even look at me when I tried to tell them. Said I was stirring up devil talk. I haven't slept in four nights." "Town talks plenty of the devil," Viktor said, his voice dry as birch bark curls by the hearth. "Don't make 'em right." He heard the mimic breathing now — not through lungs, but through mimicry, copying Jayce's panting with too much precision. The sound scratched down Viktor's spine like a rusty nail. "Please," Jayce whispered. "I don't want to die." Viktor hesitated, because he always hesitated. Because the wards weren't his doing. He'd had no mother to teach him the old ways — only the stories his bubbe told in Yiddish back before his family fled up these mountains, and the jars he buried beneath the fence line when he first arrived, desperate for safety no one else would grant him. Because breaking them meant letting something powerful in. But then he saw Jayce's face — pale with the terror of a man staring at his own death dressed in his own skin — and Viktor knew what it was to be hunted by the shape of yourself. "Stay where you are," Viktor commanded, voice hard as flint.
