I submitted the later article to the Saturday Paper.
Wish me luck! :D
I've done some very fulfilling writing over the past couple of days.
Yesterday I wrote the preamble for my 2025 best films list, and today I wrote an article discussing Del Toro's Frankenstein as a faithful book adaptation, the deep pathos of the monster and the film's Terminator parallels.

I kinda view Charlotte Gainsbourg as the female Keanu Reeves.
Both actors are great in the right roles (and Gainsbourg is overall the better actor), but they can both be far too deliberate in their acting.
What do you think?
I recently downgraded my Mac Studio from 26 Tahoe to 15 Sequoia, and rigorously backed up my applications and important files.
I deliberately backed up my documents (articles, reviews, books) three times (each on a different volume), but it turns out I'd accidentally backed them up a FOURTH time. :)
Looking at the Wasp Woman herself, do you think her design — her eyes in particular — may have influenced the Axons in Doctor Who?
Incidentally, have you seen Possessor?
Possessor is probably my favourite film of the decade so far.
I'm also disappointed to see Andrea Riseborough involved.
Andrea Riseborough is one of my favourite actresses (and she and David Jonsson are my top picks to play the Doctor), so it's sad to see her share a move with Johnny Depp. :(
Ah. Whoops.
Thanks for clarifying. :)
I briefly wondered if the next Halo title might come out for Mac.
After all, the original Halo was supposed to launch on Mac first, but soon became an Xbox launch exclusive, and didn't come out for Mac (and PC) until 2003.
But since Microsoft owns Halo, we probably won't get Halo for Mac ever again.
I really liked Dark Star, but I would still rank it last of the five Carpenter films I've seen so far.
Halloween, The Thing and Big Trouble are all better.
I enjoy Dark Star more than The Fog, but The Fog is more technically-competent (you'd expect this from his ninth feature versus his first).
There is also some iffy CGI for the deer and wolves in the second act, but it doesn't really bother me.
The only thing I didn’t like about Del Toro’s Frankenstein was Mia Goth as Lady Elizabeth (and she’s usually amazing).
It could be that Goth doesn’t take well to the 1850s dialect or the role is a bit low-key for her; whatever the case, she feels a bit subdued and sleepy in Frankenstein. 🤷‍♀️
Frankenstein also has some sick action moments, which (as I mentioned before) I’m sure pay tribute to The Terminator, of all movies.
The Long Walk is still my favourite film of 2025, but Frankenstein shot up to become my runner-up for film of the year.
I LOVED Frankenstein yesterday.
Oscar Isaac is compelling and detestable as Victor Frankenstein, Jacob Elordi is achingly sympathetic as his monster, and even for a Del Toro film, Frankenstein plays out like a visually stunning macabre fairytale, carrying wonder, disgust and deep pathos.
That’s exactly right.
I prefer just spelling them out: “eighties”.
The Host (by Bong Joon-ho, not Stephanie Meyer).
I think I saw this (and reviewed it on my channel) a long time ago.
Does Little Fish star Cate Blanchett as a former drug dealer trying to leave that life behind?

Have you seen the trailer for Shell?
I saw the trailer today (before Frankenstein), and while it might be a good movie, it looks like a Substance knockoff.
I’m looking forward to Yorgos Lanthimos’s new film Bugonia next week.
It would be funny if the two men who kidnap Michelle Fuller are right about her being something nefarious, but they’re barking up the wrong tree and she’s, like, a witch or an Illuminatus or an Extinction Entity, not an alien.
In his new Frankenstein film, I'm convinced that Guillermo Del Toro paid homage to The Terminator in some of the action beats on the ice.
You'll know it when you see it. ;)
I’m certain it’s from Ingmar Bergman’s Hour Of The Wolf.
[SPOILER FOR THE NEW FRANKENSTEIN MOVIE]

Since Dr. Victor Frankenstein, in his dying moments, finally accepts and claims the monster as his son, and the monster beforehand never had a name, the most fitting name for him would probably be a mononymous Nordic “Viktorsson”.
And yet for Aristotle, a virtuous act is the moderate middle-point between vices of inadequacy and excess.
I’d never really thought of the Golden Mean in the following terms before, but aren’t Aristotle’s ethics kind of on a spectrum?
Will the closed beta be available for Mac?
If so, I’ll happily take part. :)
