I wrote about ANGEL'S EGG for my reader's choice series. This has been one of my all time favorite movies since I saw it for the first time around a decade ago. I love it, and I hope my love for the movie came through.

The Biblical story of Noah is retold near the end of Mamoru Oshii’s avant-garde anime classic Angel’s Egg. Biblical allusions are commonplace in Oshii’s art, but he isn’t a devout religious filmmaker. He uses the notion of faith, identity and the perception of existence through the dream state, wakefulness and alternate (oftentimes technological) realities to probe at what it means to be alive. He was fascinated by the philosophical and symbolic meanings that he found in reading religious texts, and in the case of Angel’s Egg, he and co-creator Yoshitaka Amano, created a speculative apocalyptic version of the story of Noah, but told through the perspective of those left behind by God. The story follows a prodigal soldier in search of truth, and a young girl who is caretaker to an egg she has found in the wet wasteland. He carries a weapon in the shape of a cross, and she keeps her egg underneath her dress for incubation. The soldier is the keeper of the story of Noah. He tells her that it rained for forty days and forty nights, and all manner of beast and man saw the tides rise on the seventh day and drown the Earth. After the rains stopped, Noah commanded a dove from his ark to find land, but the dove never returned. Another seven days passed, and he sent the second dove, who also vanished in the endless horizon. The soldier speculates that the strength of the bird’s gave out and they were swallowed by the sea. As time marched forward, even Noah forgot about the old world, and could only conceive of the never-ending ocean that lay before him. The animals turned to stone, and there was no color to be found in the ambivalence of the sky, let alone a rainbow. As he tells of fatalist Noah, the girl listens, and holds her dearest egg close to her ear, and she tells him that she can hear the rustling of wings, and the baby’s breath of her dove. Her hope speaks to her in whispers only she can understand. In her belief, she can envision flying away on strong wings
