As @kqednews.kqed.org reported last week, automated speed enforcement for reckless and dangerous driving is already effective -- an SFMTA study tracking speeds along 15 of the corridors where the cameras have been installed found an average 72% reduction in speeding. www.kqed.org/news/1205860...

Your legacy will live on as the vision of Sunset Dunes comes to fruition – it’s already the third most visited park in the City! Thank you for your bold leadership and we’ll see you in the park.

SFBike supports a people-first vision for San Francisco and we applaud Supervisor Engardio @joelengardio.bsky.social for upholding San Francisco’s transportation and climate values to create Sunset Dunes.

"[Since Market went car-free], injury crashes have dropped by 40%, and transit has improved speed and efficiency by 14%. It is actually helping people get downtown, which is supposedly the goal of [the Mayor's] action, but really it will be getting in the way of it."
sfbike.org
"This is a step backwards. We share with the Mayor the desire to revive Market Street. The way to do that is to make it more welcoming and safe for people to walk, bike, and take transit. This takes us away from that goal."
sfbike.org
"The Mayor wants to revitalize Market Street. Rather than generating new trips to these neighborhoods, the likelier outcome is that trips that would otherwise be made by sustainable transportation will be replaced by car trips. That’s not a policy success, it’s a failure."

Today, the Keep Market Street Moving alliance showed up in force, with dozens of San Franciscans turning up to deliver public comment demanding that the SFMTA Board of Directors take seriously its authority to adopt regulations about road usage, and take seriously their oversight of Market Street.

Improving the experience of *being on* Market Street, with efforts like activations and night markets, are what bring people out to Market Street – not private vehicles.

Thanks @kqednews.kqed.org for this thoughtful article about Market Street and the about the impending chaos Mayor Lurie is opening the door to by allowing ridehail taxi companies back onto the corridor.

We've already gotten 16 thousand emails sent to the mayor in just twelve hours –  there's still time to add your name and tell the Mayor to reverse course on his decision to allow private vehicles back on Market Street!

Just as we predicted, the floodgates have opened, and we’re already seeing all kinds of private vehicles on Market. Coupled with recent Muni cuts, the corridor is on a fast track back to being one of the most dangerous and congested streets in our city. Read our joint statement:

fyi – SF's speed cameras will begin issuing fines starting tomorrow. Speeding is the #1 cause of severe and fatal crashes on our streets, and early data shows that daily speed warnings are dropping up to 34% at some intersections. These cameras are slowing down our streets and saving lives. 👏
