11/ Last but not least, je suis devenue chercheuse associée à l'IMEC et, comme je le raconte aux pages 34 et 35 des derniers Carnets de l'IMEC, je me consacre désormais à recenser l'ensemble des archives produites par Legotien, qu'elles se trouvent dans le fonds Althusser ou ailleurs.
La deuxième vie d’Hélène Legotien Intellectuelle et militante communiste à qui Louis Althusser a donné la mort en 1980, Hélène Legotien a mené des travaux considérables dans le domaine de la sociologie. Peu s’en souvenaient, il y a encore quelques années. Lucie Rondeau du Noyer raconte sa patiente et minutieuse immersion dans les archives de cette femme longtemps invisibilisée et dont la biographie est trop souvent réduite à sa fin tragique. Si je n’étais pas animée par la conviction qu’Hélène Legotien (1910-1980) mérite sa place dans l’histoire des idées françaises, je n’au- rais pas passé tous ces jours à retranscrire une partie de ses travaux et de sa correspondance, conservés dans le fonds Louis Althusser à l’Imec. Indéniable, l’émotion causée par le premier contact avec chacun de ces documents m’a d’abord empêchée de prendre des notes. Avant de me résoudre à cette opération minutieuse et légèrement hypnotisante, il fallait que la première lecture du texte me force la main, qu’elle me persuade qu’il s’agissait d’une source nécessaire pour répondre à ma problématique : mieux cerner la pensée et la pratique de cette « sociologue pas ordinaire ». Lors de mon troisième séjour à l’Imec, quand je me suis décidée à lire la correspondance adressée par Legotien à Althusser entre 1947 et 1970, ma capacité limitée à m’approprier, par la prise de notes, cette matière sensible et abondante a constitué une protection. Dans les longues lettres qu’elle adresse à son compagnon, Legotien mélange allègrement personnel, poli- tique et professionnel. Il faut donc parcourir toutes les pages manuscrites et dactylographiées, afin de ne pas manquer ses récits de terrain sociologiqueetsesdéveloppementsthéoriques. Pour venir à bout de ce massif épistolaire, il faut aussi éviter de s’attarder sur les confidences intimes, les récits de rêve et les disputes qui peuplent également les « lettres à Louis ». Au contact prolongé de cette correspondance, l'ai constaté que certaines lettres envoyées par Althusser à Legotien ne figuraient pas dans les Lettres à Hélène éditées par Grasset en 2011. Or ces lettres se trouvent dans les archives d'Hélène Legotien. Elle avait en effet pris soin de les recopier et elles sont donc, rappelons-le, à la disposition de tous les chercheurs qui en font la demande motivée. Il m'aura fallu sept semaines, étalées sur sept saisons, pour poser un regard, furtif ou appliqué, sur toutes les archives produites par Hélène Legotien. Cette fréquentation étalée dans le temps m'a permis d'éprouver combien la recherche, si elle naît souvent du manque, prospère grâce à ce qui reste et, pour parler un peu familièrement, il y a, à l'Imec, de « beaux restes » de Legotien! Parmi ceux-ci, six rapports de sociologie qui donnent la parole aux exploités de la France des Trente Glorieuses, des notes de travail aussi rigoureuses qu'engagées et plusieurs dossiers rendant compte des avancées de son enquête sociologique à Fos-sur-Mer qui fut brutalement interrompue par sa mort le 16 novembre 1980. Sur les plans humain, historique et juridique, rien ne viendra réparer le meurtre d'Hélène Althusser par son mari. De son vivant, elle a cependant laissé assez de traces, sous son nom de naissance (Rvtmann) ou sous son nom de plume (Legotien), pour que sa trajectoire biographique puisse être étudiée indépendamment de cette fin tragique. En 2024, plusieurs chercheurs, journalistes et créateurs s'intéressent désormais à cette bibliographie et ces archives, conservées à l'Imec et ailleurs. Chacun d'entre eux cherche à redonner vie à celle qui fut tout à la fois une militante, une communiste, une intellectuelle et une femme de cinéma « pas ordinaire ». En retour, cet intérêt collectif pousse celles et ceux qui l'ont connue à prendre la parole et, pour certains, à signaler qu'ils possèdent, eux aussi, des documents signés Legotien.
