Imagine if all the money spent on AI was spent on city infrastructure.

Can they just download the Epstein files to our phones like they did with that U2 album?

AI can generate captions, but it can’t spend three weeks obsessing over a Kenyan documentary, eating a sad protein toast as a hyperfixation meal.

AI could potentially rewrite my newsletter (although I'm working on adding mistakes, so you know it's still me), but it can’t drag itself through 60 tabs on Djibouti at 2 AM because the story suddenly got... very... colonial...and... interesting.

I love stumbling on things AI still can’t do. For example, AI can summarize a country in three bullet points, but it still can’t convince a German funder that migration journalism is actually a structural issue.

Here’s some important news I learned from @shamjaff.bsky.social’s global newsletter today: Australia secretively shipping people for indefinite detention in Nauru

This world sucks sometimes, but this newsletter is great, and you should sign up for it.

I think (and I’m really afraid of this) there will come a time (and maybe it’s not that far away) where people will shrug at “that’s not real. That’s AI”.

I recently watched a TikTok summarizing an article that was summarizing a documentary that was summarizing a trial. How valuable is information these days? Not sure.

Federal Judges— or staff, but same-same— used "AI" to summarize & draft rulings, issued them w/o checking the work, leading to basic factual errors, & thus undermining the facticity & validity of the rulings entire.

Two federal judges say use of AI led to errors in US court rulings
Two federal judges admitted in response to an inquiry by U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley that members of their staff used artificial intelligence to help prepare recent court orders that Grassley called "error-ridden."
