Ismailis hold that the Aga Khan IV descends directly from an unbroken line of imams going back to the Prophet Muhammad.

Not since 1957, when Prince Shah Karim al-Husseini succeeded his grandfather Sultan Muhammad Shah, Aga Khan III, has the community experienced the death of a spiritual leader.
Prince Karim Aga Khan IV, the spiritual leader of Ismaili Muslims around the world, has died at 88.

It's almost impossible to grasp the enormity of this moment for the Ismaili community.

More to come:

More than 4 years after Ejaz Choudry, a 62-year-old father with schizophrenia, was fatally shot in his Mississauga apartment, CBC found the officer who shot him had previously tipped a paraplegic man from his wheelchair during an arrest.

@shanifanasser.bsky.social fought the publication ban and wow
Choudry was a
62-year-old father of four who lived with schizophrenia.

He was shot within 11 seconds of police breaking down his balcony door.

Police fought to keep names of the officers hidden, citing safety risks. A judge ruled against them.

CBC was the sole media intervenor in the case.
The alleged German Christmas market attacker was Islamophobic, had posts on X account supportive of anti-Islam and far-right parties, including the Alternative for Germany (AfD), Reuters reports.

The scenes from Sednaya prison in Syria are shocking; people wandering into the light after decades in dark detention & torture.

I interviewed Omar Alshogre, a former Sednaya child prisoner, about his reaction to history being made in Syria this weekend.

"The very prospect that justice is conceivable, that the arc of the moral universe endures, that there is a light that was always there at the end of the tunnel, if only you squinted amid the enveloping dark? I cannot quite conceive of the words."

On the enormity of this moment for Syria:
I’m not really worthy to write anything about beautiful Syria today but they asked me to and so I tried through tears to write some words that are inadequate but here they are anyway: Dawn in Damascus

In the end, Bashar al-Assad had nothing to say to the country he bludgeoned and bled, but what matters now is that his ‘forever’ rule is over

Marc Lépine's birth name, Gamil Gharbi, is fuelling the term "Killed by a Muslim" on X.

His mom, French Canadian, was a former nun. He was estranged from his Algerian father and changed his name at 14.

Here's a worthwhile piece on the motivation to cast him as "other": rsc-src.ca/fr/voix-de-l...

Quebec Premier François Legault says he wants to ban praying in public and is considering using the notwithstanding clause to do so.

In a 2006 Israeli operation, a bulldozer plowed through a wall of the Canadian section of the Gaza War Cemetery. CBC spoke to a groundskeeper who pieced five headstones back together. www.cbc.ca/news/world/a...

Who knows if these more recently damaged sections will ever be restored.
The Commonwealth Gaza War Cemetery is one that I didn't include in my original thread on Twitter, but one that was also damaged by the IDF. Imagery from December shows IDF vehicles nearby and in January the Indian, Canadian and Turkish sections have all been damaged.
