many people saw what was coming when the Christian right started redefining discrimination as “religious freedom” and now here it is deployed (at best) to defend a failure to do the assignment and (at worst?) as workplace discipline, for existing in a manner unacceptable to Christian nationalists

I dream of a day when corporations have to reapply for every tax break, contract, and grant every six months, with a requirement that it is the CEO who must complete the paperwork, and attest under penalty of law that they personally did so.
The shutdown was an excuse, not a reason, to go after SNAP.
SNAP recipients have to re-apply either every 6 months or year. Onerous process, with almost no fraud.
There are no shutdown-related requirement for SNAP renewal. But it would predictably result in low-income families going hungry.

The content of these emails, at a bare minimum, creates an appearance of corruption that would cause any news outlet to demand accountability if it were an organization they covered. I don’t see why news outlets themselves should not be subject to that same scrutiny. NYT must be transparent here.
