What causes homelessness? It isn't rocket science – it’s a lack of genuinely affordable and accessible homes.

This #WorldHomelessDay, we're sharing a message of hope that homelessness ISN'T inevitable.

We haven't built enough social rent homes for decades. These genuinely affordable homes are desperately needed to fix the housing emergency we all face.

As a society we have a responsibility to make sure everyone has a safe place to call home: shltr.org.uk/WfQTW

On #WorldHomelessDay, it's important to remember that the scale of homelessness goes much deeper than what is visible on the surface.

This is due to a broken housing system.
An image of an iceberg. Above the waterline is the figure of 4667 rough sleeping, below the water at the larger part of the iceberg is the figure of 131140 households in temporary accommodation. Deeper still is an unknown figure for the other types of hidden homelessness. The tagline at the bottom is the hashtag for World Homeless Day.

If we want to curb spiralling homelessness and increasing housing costs in London, developers must build their fair share of genuinely affordable social homes to get people out of temporary accommodation and into safe, secure, and affordable homes.

For decades, people across the country have struggled to have a safe, secure home.

Our research shows that, for Black households, the hidden barriers to accessing a social home make it even harder.

❌ However, the government didn’t listen to people with lived experience of racism in accessing a social home. They chose not to direct the regulator to explicitly make anti-racism a key feature.

❌ They have extended the period by which social landlords must comply, further delaying this reform.

This week, there was a big update on social housing.

The government has directed the Regulator of Social Housing to implement the long-awaited new Competence & Conduct Standard – aimed at professionalising the sector, so that people are treated better when accessing and living in a social home.

The housing emergency you see is only part of the story.

Research shows that hidden racism in social housing is making it harder for Black households to access a social home.

Since this blog, the government has ramped up social housing investment by 70% 🙌. A big step forward. But, they must go further and be confident in their ability to deliver the social rent homes we need. 🏠💪

This Autumn Budget is the moment to act.

👉 Unfreeze Local Housing Allowance so it covers at least the cheapest 30% of local rents
👉 To unlock affordable private rentals so families can move on
👉 Stop councils spending billions on emergency housing
