If you don't like the pitch of W, that's a good thing

july 4th, 2026, is guaranteed to be a deeply consequential day in history basically no matter what
January 22, 2026 at 6:06 AM
honestly the name being "W" is probably far more damaging than any other aspect, even identity verification lol
nobody is really looking for a twitterlike with identity verification and a name which is basically guaranteed to have no cultural impact or relevance

I hope W is still ready to basically fail though

theres a lot of immediate questions i have towards the function of the platform rn that i think are still far too unclear for me to say whether or not this is good/bad. but i definitely am not a fan of mandatory id verification for users.

the id verification stuff is still concerning, but being on protocol can mitigate that as well if good adversarial migration is possible, and non-anonymous social is always just another option on protocol

which is, honestly, quite cool!
so if W is really an atproto app that's *really* good news for the atproto ecosystem. a well-funded meaningful competitor to bluesky is what we've needed for ages, and it doesn't hurt that it's in the EU either. less single points of failure!

okay i like W now. W. good. atproto good. W.
Turns out, W may run on ATProto. Dope.

Probably should've led with that in the initial PR cycle, and I wish they had given props to other folks building ATProto infra in Europe as well. Not too late to do so!
W is a new European platform aspiring to be an alternative to X.

What if we told you that it may actually be launching as an ATProto powered app?

This is a W for ATProto

they should let whoever runs the @bluesky twitter account and @bluesky_social threads account run @bsky.app. even if just for a day

The foundation of personal computing is the filesystem.

The foundation of the internet is a networked filesystem.

The foundation of a new social web will likely be a social filesystem. (It remains an ope question if atproto is such a foundation)
It seems a fork lies ahead, is atproto a portable database for a bunch of apps or a new type of post-app, social filesystem?
the whole point of atproto is Authenticated Transfer, I think at least. For others its just data portability

The reason this is important is because filesystem (standardized file types), plaintext (copy and paste), and pixel (screenshots, recordings) infrastructures remain some of the most important forcing functions to adversarial interop against siloed apps. Mobile has ceded all to the whims of apps.
Wait mobile apps can intercept and modify screenshots??

fun fact: one of bluesky's first employees was a twitter engineer named aaron goldman. he was only there for 4 months but in the community matrix chat he mentioned that atproto drew heavily from his phd work, a project named cryptographically curated filesystem
