Planning ahead for #Halloween. No doubt we'll be getting a lot of visitors on the evening and no doubt quite a few will be cosplaying #HarryPotter characters. Maybe we should give them jelly beans to match the book lore instead of mini chocolate bars like every halloween?

An exercise I do when learning a new #programming language or #computer architecture is to build a simplified #Forth (my favourite language) interpreter. In fact, my game Sakura Blaster originally had a Forth interpreter built in to generate the levels, but was pulled out to simplify game testing.

Nowadays my main method of listening to #music is via #CDs. Far less frustrating to use than #streaming, doesn't require a constant internet connection, and you don't lose the songs if you stop paying.

Recently I've been going through my iTunes and finding lots of bands I never got round to listening to and just discovering now.

Regarding point 2: Obviously data collection is popular with marketers, but aside from legal and ethical issues, you need to handle file access permissions as well as an import/processing function for each file type. Stick to files that are part of the app, created by it, or what the user imports.

I wrote three stable videogames (well, a 4th is unfinished) using three basic rules:
1) Check Data Input before Using It (example: float/int mixups)
2) Don't touch anything you don't need to (so no slurping user files)
3) Do tasks through APIs, not directly (prevents incompatibility and errors)

So what's my point? I think we need to put Rust, Cloud, and ChatGPT in the bin and go back to good old C++, HTML, and Learning to code rather than Copying code off websites.

Secure/Stable coding isn't hard either. Have your app check data input before it runs and halt if it will cause problems.

Even Web technology is devolving in favour of showing off gimmicks in exchange for security and stability. Half the sites on the internet use insecure Cloud services or Wordpress, which is why they keep getting hacked. Or they include malware embedded in adverts, an issue every browser maker ignores

My best example is how so many modern utilities tend to be written in buggy Python or Rust, are console-based with no UI, suffer from dependency hell, and barely work. Back in the 2000s we had Visual Basic apps which anyone could use without endlessly googling for help, and just worked.

I don't believe that #AI is killing #programming like we think it is. What is killing #programming is how the culture has changed from a problem-solving task to a popularity contest on social media. And how languages have devolved, to where usability and flexibility is ignored in favour of gimmicks.
