Always proud of the things Peterhouse Choir achieve, but never more so than on days like this, when the Choir's first ever album goes on general release with Naxos. Remarkable music from @peterhousecam.bsky.social Chapel from the 1630s

Listening now: really rather liked that new Rutter introit that marries together Herbert's 'The Call' with a Gibbons 'Song 13' (but then I would say that about anything that combines Herbert and Gibbons...)

Choral Evensong

Live from Westminster Abbey, with an introit written especially for the service by John Rutter on the occasion of his 80th birthday.

Recommended release from MusicWeb International:
“well prepared, with accurate intonation and most expressive singing, and the whole disc is a pleasure to hear…I hope the choir goes on to record more from their Partbooks"

Just received the first review of our new @peterhousecam.bsky.social Choir CD, and it's a cracker:

🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 from BBC Music Magazine

Praised for its “warmly blended account”, & the way it “catches winningly the bounding enthusiasm...and bright buoyant rhythms” of this music

Echoing Victoria: it was such a privilege to take part in what turned out to be Melvyn's last series of #InOurTime - and it's really flattering to see our episode on George Herbert listed in @thetimes.com top 15 episodes of the show yesterday

Inevitable, I suppose, but #InOurTime won't be quite the same again: what a landmark moment. I feel so lucky to have snuck in at the eleventh hour for his final series. All the best to Melvyn on his retirement, & @simontillotson.bsky.social as he steers the ship into new waters with a new presenter

Melvyn Bragg has decided to stand down as host of In Our Time, the BBC says.

And, if you're interested in my thoughts about the experience of performing this weird and wonderful piece of 17thC ecological minimalism (yes - it absolutely has all of those things) you can read my short essay here (& do explore the rest of the site!)

And, for some déjà vu (déjà entendu?) here’s the 18 year old Wilson taking his lead from Byrd, note for note, in Peterhouse Chapel the 1630s: open.spotify.com/track/4XEVQu...

Today, two tracks: one very well-known, the second more unfamiliar. Thomas Wilson, about 18 when he became organist at @peterhousecam.bsky.social, borrowed the opening of William #Byrd’s “Prevent us O Lord” and then takes off in his own fresh direction. Here’s Byrd: open.spotify.com/track/0r3TpY...

William Smith’s Responses are well-known, but have you ever heard his incredible festal setting of Psalm 85? I think it’s fabulous:

This is a realy powerful piece. How on earth did we get to where we are now?

The writer would do well to read an earlier piece by Rowan Williams, on the "cost of living crisis" as "a sign that something basic about how we imagine society has gone fantastically wrong"- turning “living” into "a commodity that some can afford and some can’t".
www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...
A typically wise quote by Rowan Williams: "A “cost of living” crisis is a sign that something basic about how we imagine society has gone fantastically wrong. When “living” becomes a commodity that some can afford and some can’t, the assumption that we ought to be able to trust one another to sustain our security is being challenged at the root. We are being lured into that most destructive of myths: that the essential human position is as an individual purchaser acquiring desirable goods – not a contributor to the building of a trustworthy network of relations, dependable enough to allow more people to become active and generous contributors."
