Maybe young republican leadership has always been explicitly and knowingly racist, idk. But I did not hear anything resembling the racism in those group chats when I was a politics major at a very conservative college, nor the summer I was a DC intern at a conservative think tank

My parents' generation was super racist, but they took pains to hide it from us. So a lot of young conservatives in the 90s and early aughts were earnest small government and/or evangelical types.

As I said, the overt racists and radicals had to form their own orgs.

You can find countless articles of “Young Republican chapter forced to disband due to racist/antisemitic/misogynistic/etc conduct” going back decades.

The sensible liberals can’t seem to realize Young Republican clubs are the ideological and de facto successor to 50s/60s “whites only clubs”

For those tempted to say Young Republicans have always been this way, they really have not. When I worked on campus and did bipartisan college events after, they were very much not like this.

That’s why groups like YCT and eventually TPUSA formed — because Young Republicans weren’t radical enough.
