Sabethes cyaneus is a species of mosquito found in Central and South America. Its nickname is the paddle-legged beauty, can you guess why? These mosquitoes have a striking iridescent blue color from their scales and almost look like they float through the air while flying.

Do you ever wonder what it would be like to be stuck inside a mosquito tornado? This might be close. 🦟🦟🦟

When do mosquitoes start "slowing down"? This depends on weather! Once temperatures get below 50°F and daylight shortens, mosquitoes become less active. As of last week, there were 8,609 mosquitoes collected in a single night from one mosquito surveillance trap. We'll see what this week brings! 🦟

West Nile virus updates from across the state for human & horse cases. You can find the recent & past reports here: epi.utah.gov/west-nile-vi... & mosquito positive samples: maps.vectorsurv.org/arbo. Wear an EPA approved insect repellent and cover up exposed skin to prevent mosquito bites!

Don't forget, it isn't just us humans that can get irritated with, or even sick, from mosquitoes and the diseases they can carry. Horses can be affected by West Nile virus and Western equine encephalitis virus. Luckily, there are vaccines against these for horses!

After collecting mosquitoes from our adult mosquito surveillance traps, we test the species that can carry mosquito-borne disease to determine if there is presence or absence of any pathogens. Do you know the three mosquito-borne diseases that we test for?

Mosquito abatement districts in Utah, including SLCMAD, have been detecting recent positive mosquito samples of St. Louis encephalitis virus (SLEV). It is not new to the U.S., & has been detected in Utah before. Like WNV, there is no vaccine to prevent SLEV. Remember to prevent mosquito bites! 🦟
