A quick intro to Slumberland: we're a tiny indie record label that started in 1989 in MD/DC and has resided in Oakland, CA since 1992. We've mostly focused on indiepop but SLR has also released power-pop, punk, shoegaze, post-punk, etc. Stubbornly uncool.

But, man, the rampant sexism and rockism in a lot of the press that Hollings quotes. Good heavens. The US press barely talked about this music anyway but I had kind of forgotten how utterly dismissive (bordering on hostile) so much of the UK press was too.

Been reading and totally digging Saskia Hollingsโ€™ โ€œYou & Me Against The World.โ€ These bands were my heroes at the time and their scene seemed to cool and remote, itโ€™s fascinating to dig in now and see they were a lot like us. But way cooler.

Ebo Taylor, who did for Ghanaian music what his friend Fela Kuti did for Nigeria, has been called the greatest rhythm guitarist in history.

His son Kweku Taylor:
โ€œThe world has lost a giant, a colossus of African music, leaving behind an unmatched artistry legacy. Dad, your light will never fade.โ€

And while I'm at it, here's a link Joel Cusumano's KPISS show from this week. Some very nice SLR & Skep Wax representation, and lots of other good sounds too!

Listening to Joel Cusumano's KPISS show this week and he dropped a lovely Mono tune, reminding me about the sleek 2step remix that came out on the "High LIfe" 12". A very good era for remixes on pop records!

And of course all the ads for AI are enraging. That one where these office drones use AI to automate their boring spreadsheets or whatever so they can buzz off long lunches was so emblematic. Yes, I'm sure the bosses will pay you to socialize at "work" while AI does the labor (poorly).
