yeah, cutting off mobile and internet connectivity is now one of the very first moves that invading forces often make when they take over a city. (the invading forces then rely upon Starlink for their own purposes).

we recently saw the RSF do exactly this in El Fasher in Sudan.
If a Second American Civil War ever breaks out, people will be stunned by how fragile the internet can be. All the surveillance tech in the world won't help you if the power goes out, and the more concentrated digital infrastructure becomes, the more vulnerable it gets.

there's a reason the library of congress just literally prints out the internet and stores it away in boxes

very solid chance the early digital age will be a gigantic black hole of records for future historians

Back in college, which admittedly was a decade and change ago, almost all the papers I needed to read I had to ILL. And I'd get back scanned copies of physical journals, where you could sometimes see the librarian's hand in the image.

I can't imagine all the old stacks are digital now, either

damn you're telling me that sin taxes work to reduce consumption of socially harmful goods while keeping them legal and thus avoiding the problems of criminalization?

I mean, it’s not technically insider trading, since knowing what Bad Bunny’s first song is doesn’t involve trading. But convincing people to bet on something where people actually know the answer is bad, actually, an order of magnitude worse than just encouraging problematic gambling.
