I've always been impressed with @carpentries.carpentries.org and it is great to see their integrity in standing up for their principles, even when there are significant costs to doing so.👏

ICYMI: In September 2024, The Carpentries submitted a proposal for 1.5 million USD to the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) Pathways to Enable Open-Source Ecosystems (POSE) Program, and were extremely pleased to learn that the proposal was recommended for funding.

Super impressed by the integrity shown by this NGO. May we all have similar courage to stand up for our principles when pushed against a wall by this admin.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: We refuse to reinforce systems of oppression and exclusion.

Great commentary on the new global bird phylogeny, if I do say so myself www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/...

The CSUN Faculty Senate just passed a resolution opposing the CSU adoption of ChatGPT Edu without faculty consultation at a cost of ~$1 million per month.
Thanks to @jbyoder.org for organizing!

The new era of global bird phylogenies begins – this one built over several years by @snacktavish.bsky.social and team massively increases sample size and will be a fantastic resource for macroevolution and macroecology. 🪶 🌐 🧪

We just published a new global bird phylogeny. It synthesizes the work of thousands of researchers before us, and it will grow and improve over time. @snacktavish.bsky.social @birdsoftheworld.bsky.social www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/...
Short term @birdsoftheworld.bsky.social is supporting updates, and hopefully that will be a productive long term integration! And yes - it is relatively low cost, and supported by Open Tree of Life too (also has sustainability challenges, but it's low cost and a passion project for tenured faculty)
Yes! Thanks - We actually have posted 2 new trees since submission, and another one since acceptance, and will have it posted with the new 2024 taxonomy by June! Sometimes publication wheels turn slowly, but phylogenies keep getting updated :)
A great and very reasonable question! In the short term @birdsoftheworld.bsky.social has taken on supporting updates, (there's actually already a newer version posted than the one in the paper, and one in the works!) and hopefully that collaboration/support will pan out for the long term as well.

There's even a handy R package to make it easy to access any set of relationships you're interested in and link them to public datasets! 'clootl' - up on CRAN. github.com/eliotmiller/...
A complete and dynamic tree of birds - out today in PNAS! Teamwork with @eliotmiller.bsky.social and others at
@birdsoftheworld.bsky.social and Open Tree of Life to put together current relationships across all birds. www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/...

‘The Tree of All Birds’ is an excellent name for a medieval fable.

But also an extraordinary accomplishment in evolutionary mapping and visualisation for around 11,000 bird species.
