What happens when science funding disappears?
At UCSF and the SF VA, labs are laying off staff, trials are paused, and patients are left waiting.
Our new Civic episode breaks down how federal cuts — and now a shutdown — are reshaping science in the Bay Area.

Thanks @mildobserver.bsky.social for taking the time to chat with me, superstar @erinmorrow.bsky.social & others. Our convo was inspired by the McClintock Letters, run by @cornellasap.bsky.social & @snapcoalition.bsky.social, w/ the mission of reconnecting scientists with their hometown communities.

Today my @nytimes.com colleagues and I are launching a new series called Lost Science. We interview US scientists who can no longer discover something new about our world, thanks to this year‘s cuts. Here is my first interview with a scientist who studied bees and fires. Gift link: nyti.ms/3IWXbiE

Today's Nobel Prize in Chemistry is for the discovery and stabilization of metal-organic frameworks, stable networks of metal ions and carbon (organic) molecules

Applications of these porous compounds include catalysis and pollution remediation

Six of nine Nobel Laureates so far this year have been American based, half of whom immigrated to the US. Four have ties to University of California.

Prof Yaghi was born in Jordan to Palestinian refugee parents who could barely read and write. He immigrated to the US as a 15 year old.

Please share with anyone who cares about NSF support for graduate students and take 30 seconds to sign and leave a comment.

The deadline for the 2025 Graduate Research Fellowship Program is about one month away and literally no one can apply. #NSFGRFP
