And just like that, the last of the singers has “left the building.” After two decades of loving and performing Grateful Dead music, it was a true honor and highlight of my life to get to play with Bob Weir for nearly five years in Furthur. I have written that Phil was my guru, or mentor, of staying present, or “being here now” while jamming. Well, Bob was my guru of “tragedy narrowly averted.” Balancing those two influences was definitely interesting… and perhaps I failed the final initiation, caught like a deer in the headlights as my hero collapsed. Furthur was a real, working band: we spent as much time rehearsing new original tunes as we did working out the nuances of deep tracks in the Grateful Dead repertoire, and by the end of 5 years we had played over 400 different songs and were pretty far into each other heads. There was no one “above” Bob and Phil in Furthur, it was a “brother/brother family business,” and in my time with them, they were on fire as passionate music nerds, still seeking new sounds with new gear and challenging themselves (and us!) to learn new material constantly. I can still see Bob sitting cross-legged on the floor poking through knobs and option menus in his amp rack, like a kid with a new set of Legos. He was a mystic as well, deeply spiritual, full of wild stories (want to know how the accordion and great sauces came to Mexico? Ask Bob about the Franco-Prussian war, lol!) And also a thoughtful observer of modern culture… did you know that TRI was originally envisioned as the HQ for a new news network? The theme was to be that all editorial content (“opinion pieces”) would be delivered by puppets to distinguish them from the proper journalism. I think one of my favorite stories of his was how he accepted an invitation to visit a new sweetie in Alaska back in the 80's, an indigenous woman, who proceeded to ditch him with her remote tribal community for a week while she ran “errands” in the surrounding territory.
