I was very much not a fan of the Phoenix Mercury’s old logo - I think it looks like it should be on a spinning sign outside a retro 50s diner. But this new one? Looks like the logo for a kids social media app with a “quirky” name like MeMoz that only works on a specific toy phone (sold separately).

“Smith-Njigba is so difficult for teams to stop… because his skills are a mixture of the other players etched in the team’s record books. He can release off the line of scrimmage and run routes like Baldwin… He can track deep passes like Lockett and run away from defenders like Metcalf.”
Jaxon Smith-Njigba steals the show (again) in Seahawks' win, maintaining historic pace

Maybe I’m over analyzing but, to me, this looks like just one more indication that the Chicago Sky doesn’t have a good relationship with its players and vis versa. That place is Dysfunctional with a capital D.
I missed this earlier, but Gabby Williams will represent the Seattle Storm at the #WNBA Draft Lottery on Sunday. May Gabby bring good luck.

Nailed it. No idea why the WNBA and NBA are just playing games with this CBA.

The New York Liberty have finally hired a new head coach.
ESPN story on the New York Liberty hiring Golden State Warriors assistant Chris DeMarco, first reported by Shams Charania, as the franchise's new head coach. Three of five WNBA hires this offseason have NBA ties:

“The owners' previous negotiating tactic, loudly screaming at anyone in earshot about how the WNBA is a money-losing venture and they are basically only doing this out of the goodness of their hearts, doesn't fly in the age of billion-dollar TV deals and expansion.”

YOU SHADY AF @nba.com & @wnba.com

“Multiple sources … said that the numbers are misleading. While salaries can reach a maximum of more than $1.1 million in the league’s offer, the base supermax contract would still pay between $800,000 and $850,000 annually—as was the case in early October.“

Whaddaya know? Turns out players don’t actually agree the latest CBA proposal is a “highly lucrative package designed to bring negotiations to a quick conclusion.”
Rather “The WNBPA does not see the WNBA's latest collective bargaining agreement proposal as something that moves negotiations forward.”

This is what passes for insightful analysis on the pod now, (Paraphrasing, barely)
-What are your thoughts on the new CBA offer?
-Well, I think the players definitely want an increased max salary and I think this is more than the last proposal. Which means it’s higher. So they probably like that.

The new Locked on Women’s Basketball podcast cohosts are just not good. Such a disappointing decline in quality. Please make changes. Even I, someone whose short-lived and uninspired basketball career stalled out at “HS freshman team” level, could do a better job.

Greetings @nba.com & @wnba.com!

Friendly piece of advice: Stop messing around. Embrace the inevitable and get this wrapped up. 50% of revenue to the players. Agree now or look like sexist assholes (even bigger ones) later.

“where the WNBA is right now in terms of revenue and attendance is very similar to where the NBA was at when you get in the late 70s, early 80s.

But I don't recall the NBA telling the players at that point in time, “You should feel grateful you even have a league, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson.”

A year an a half ago, the NBA negotiated an 11 year media rights deal on behalf of the WNBA and the MNBA. The total was $77 billion - of which the NBA then decided the WNBA would receive just $2.2 billion or 1/35th of the total.

Here’s one main reason that was a bad deal for the W.

David Berri convincingly points out that the WNBA’s latest reported proposed player salaries make sense ONLY IF one assumes the NBA (42% ownership), and the investor group (16% ownership) have zero responsibility for covering costs, including player salaries. Which would be absolutely bizarre.

Everyone’s favorite sports economist is back! And he even did the math for us.

“So, if this offer was accepted the WNBA players would be getting a “substantial” increase in pay from less than 7% of revenue to only 17% of revenue.”
The NBA's latest offer to the WNBA players is "highly lucrative". For the NBA owners!!

Really... this deal promises to make the NBA owners millions!!
