The Sands of Mars, 1951.
....At last the wail of the wind died away. The rocket had shed its surplus speed; the nose and knife-edge wings cooling from cherry-red....the ship racing across desert.....riding the radio beam into Port Lowell. - A.C.Clarke

40 yrs ago the ESA Giotto spacecraft was launched to Halley's Comet and later became first spacecraft to flypast and image a comet nucleus.
Built in the UK, seen here being tested.
Halley's nucleus from 600km.

The ESA Solar Orbiter spacecraft's orbit close to the Sun is enabling it to take the highest resolution complete views of the Suns disc to date.
Its now slowly increasing its orbit tilt to take images of the Suns poles.

Meteorites #3 & #4.
A piece of the Moon and Mars!
Composition matches, so thought to have been ejected in the past due to an impact and eventually finding their way to Earth.

A sketch of a Lunar Crater by R. Ball, 1896.
A few years before they were officially recognised as due to impacts, rather than volcanic, or simply strange circular mountains.

Mars it at Opposition today; Sun/Earth/Mars lined up.
But not actually the nearest or brightest which occurred on 12th?
That's because the orbits of Earth and Mars are not circular, but ellipses.

After 12 years ESA's GAIA spacecraft makes its last science observation today.
It has revolutionised our knowledge of the galaxy, and will continue to do so as much of its recorded data has yet to be analysed.
More highlights of this mission later..
