I've been on team "we're cooked" for a while. People are wired to believe the first facts (or "facts") they hear, and to get defensive if they're told they were mislead. Seen too many Facebook uncles say "well it could have been true" to be optimistic about this.
every time I discuss this there's a segment who get mad and suggests I'm saying that people don't have agency for their own actions

the U.S. news and information ecosystem is a corporatist toilet full of right wing propaganda yet every single time we run into somebody like this (who took trump's claims at face value) everybody sits around thumb to chin wondering why a woman like this has a head full of play-doh
