I really want ppl w/o Minneapolis connections to understand

You might've heard that Mpls public schools went hybrid bc so many families are in hiding. Well, a coworker just told me that today, during his kid's hybrid class, a kid's apt building was raided onscreen

46-year-old woman held in a Clinton County jail on a misdemeanor drug charge died after spending days "incoherent and covered in her own feces and urine."

The Daily had an interview with the MPD chief. They’re getting regular 911 calls because federal agents are leaving cars in the street after detaining people. Local officers are overwhelmed, feel ICE/BP are putting them at risk with dangerous tactics, unraveling progress made since George Floyd.
It's 10am in Minneapolis and rapid response is underwater, reports of chemicals deployed already.

As others have pointed out, the ratio of feds (with more arriving) to residents and square mileage here is extreme compared to what we experienced in Chicago.

We are in freefall.

Interesting -- this is the guy who lately has been going to the news and giving increasingly bigger and bigger estimates of the scope of Medicaid fraud in the state.

46% support abolishing ICE
43% oppose abolishing ICE

This is the first time that abolishing ICE has received net positive support

A few months ago, ICE hired me

I didn't sign and submit any paperwork. I almost certainly failed the drug test. I'm real outspoken about my opposition to the Trump administration, and I am extremely googlable

And yet, there it was, in plain English. "Welcome to ICE!"

You’ve Heard About Who ICE Is Recruiting. The Truth Is Far Worse. I’m the Proof.
What happens when you do minimal screening before hiring agents, arming them, and sending them into the streets? We're all finding out.

If there's one empirical insight I'd want everyone to understand about American politics, it's this:

America's problems are solved problems. Just not here.

What would change if the US simply matched the average of 31 peer democracies? Not Denmark or Norway. Just the middle of the pack. 🧵

"FEAR NOT, GREAT PEOPLE OF MINNESOTA, THE DAY OF RECKONING & RETRIBUTION IS COMING." He's ranting like an anime villain.
You can tell Trump is extremely nervous about losing the propaganda war in Minnesota, which is all that really matters to him.

He opens with a rhetorical question about “the people of Minnesota,” not just the communist scum or whatever. He knows regular people hate what’s happening in the state.

I did a whole series of stories for the Washington post late 2020/early 2021 about coup attempts, democratic backsliding and authoritarianism, and got a lot of grief from reactionary centrists about how that was "just the opinion of some elite academics"
Sure. But but it was way better for your career, and the esteem of many of your highly placed professional peers, to be wrong about this and so many people were. They’re doing great btw www.nytimes.com/2026/01/12/o...

Someone more expert than I am should do a piece compiling and explaining all the ways that Trump/Hegseth have put future US troops and civilians at risk in future conflicts because they don't give a damn about the consequences of their actions.

From what I understand it would be a lengthy item.

For those unfamiliar Bring Me The News is very much a legit local news site in MN, despite the odd name
There is a longer version of the video of a kidnapping of this kid - there really is no other word for it - here. As he is being shoved into the DHS vehicle he breaks down. At about the 2 minute mark you hear a DHS agent say "wow - fucking child" sarcastically.
