I watch my household spiders and give them silly names. Follow me to see pictures of them in the trashy corners of my old, half-renovated Ontario farmhouse. https://www.inaturalist.org/people/spidersathome

For #arachtober the 9th I would like to share some crab spiders having lunch

Mimi always looks like she's trying to put on a shirt that's too small for her

Last night's #arachtober sightings! I went to visit Mimi, my barn funnel weaver friend, and was also treated to a yellow sac spider. It's been a warm fall and my household spiders have been very active.

I put Rev. Oreo in deli cup jail for some pictures and then released her back inside the house.

Reverend Oreo must have seen that I was reading a spider field guide and decided to climb over my water bottle and several books to come and visit me on the couch.

This is Reverend Oreo, an Eastern parson spider (Herpyllus ecclesiasticus).

Happy #arachtober the fifth from the bold jumping spider I found outside the bank

Cleopatra, AKA Cleo, is the common house spider (Parasteatoda tepidariorum) who lives on my porch in a large web full of her many children. I think she is probably wealthy by spider standards, so she needed a queenly name. #arachtober

This is Noir, the false widow living under my basement stairs, doing her best impression of a black widow. Probably Steatoda borealis. I love the little white crescent on these spiders 🌒 #arachtober

I think you have a juvenile Western Black Widow (Latrodectus hesperus)!

Bites from adult females are unlikely, but can be a medical concern. You may want to gently relocate the spider if you're worried about kids or pets. For now this little one is harmless.

Good morning! Can I interest anyone in a cup of tea? #arachtober

This is the largest cellar spider I have ever seen. It feels like I have encountered an old god. I wish I could have taken a lateral picture so you could fully appreciate the largeness. Perhaps this spider is getting ready to lay eggs, or simply full of arcane secrets.

This concludes my presentation on Mimi and Kiki, two very excellent funnel weavers.

Look at their little apartments! They both come out every night to stare into the void.
Two barn funnel weaver spiders in their webs, one above the other, in the corner where a door meets a wall. The smaller web is about a hand's length above the larger web.

Recently Mimi acquired an upstairs neighbour who I believe to be a younger Tegenaria domestica, as they are quite a bit smaller than her. I have named them Kiki, and am now forever bound to this naming convention for all T. domestica I find in my house.

Earlier this month I discovered this molt underneath Mimi's web. I assume it belongs to her - you can even see the faint banding on the legs. But spiders are mysterious, so who knows?

I love this spider so much that I have even prepared a visual guide to the architectural marvel she has built on my top stair. We store our firewood in our basement, which wouldn't be possible without hardworking spiders like Mimi to provide pest control services.
