Yesterday, members of Spokane Reimagined presented the Spokane Transit Authority Board of Directors with the proposal "Moving Forward, Together" our vision for increased local investment in public transit and safe streets infrastructure.
Flyer for Moving Forward, Together: A joint effort to fund public transit and safe streets infrastructure. The Proposal: Double the voter-approved PTBA sales tax from .2% to .4% (for a total of 1%), devoting an additional $24 million annually to High Performance Transit (HPT). Utilize local Transportation Benefit Districts to fund safe streets projects. A local sales tax of .2% in the City of Spokane would raise $15 million annually. This proposal would cost the typical Spokane family approximately $88 per person, per year. Return on Investment: Safer Streets Faster Commutes More Frequent Transit More Sidewalks Better Bus Stops Neighborhood Greenways Shortened Construction Timelines Citywide Bike Share Cost Effective Projects Economic Development

Fascinating study. Note that this is 1 in 10 adults. Factor in children and the percentage of non-driving Americans is much higher. Cities and towns need to account for their mobility needs too.

The political power of the oil and auto industries is a direct result of the demand for their products.

The climate movement would get much more bang for their buck by advocating for dense land use and public transit investment.

Bonus: It would also decrease the influence of local auto dealers.

The climate movement's focus on the oil industry has got to be the most misplaced and un-strategic advocacy I've ever seen.

Oil demand, drilling, pricing, pipelines, refineries etc. is determined 100% by the car industry.

And the car industry has all the political power. Not the oil industry.

whoa. Every single one of the Sinclair advert buyers on this list is automotive or automotive related (insurance). That is one aspect of the power in our society held by car companies that I haven't seen studied enough.
