I look at you all sad faced and slack jawed. Wanting to know what the problem is. The questions bounce turn to judgements without satisfaction. And when I say I am not accepting critiques masquerading as observation. Your face screws into silence between us. I don't say that willful is a word often used on children and women, on bodies that won’t comply. I don't say that part out loud.

skip take these are the dark days. the waiting ones. soaking the whites in bleach. idle hands. waiting. for something human to arrive. plastic-bag-on-the-head days. cold white sweat. dog-hair world. i lick my wounds and wait. the ache comes wrong-- heart stopping mid-break. i resolve myself. begin again. jig the saw. pieces everywhere. drain the dregs. pull the window shades off the rods. wreck the room. shake to shake in the gloam. i am the new wrong-way right. the wrong something anywhere sometime this time. no map. not the asphalt. not the bird cutting the flat horizon into forever nothing. i need mist. i need shade. not quite light. something to lose myself in. to loose these ties. these days do not need hope. they need names. definitions. black spray paint. the lot.

tense study You loved me like something slightly gone wrong. Not a mistake— just off. Askew. A word launched and missed. A hand held too long. Then not long enough. You never could get it right. To stop a table from sitting wonky, people fold a scrap of hard paper— any random circular will do— and stuff it under one leg. Add more. Test the pressure. Wait. The goal is not balance. It is the absence of rocking. I stare at your face. Lips screwed into a tight smile. Eyes closed. Laughter pitched so high it barely registers. Your light pulls anyway. I fall into love without witness. Wonky means slightly off, but harmless. A word for instability without consequence. Like hinky, it names something wrong with a shrug. Part observation. Part permission. I am tense. I was tense before I knew why. I will stay this way, bracing, while scraps are added beneath us until the table appears still.
