Regarding North & South, my friend @sarahdaniell.bsky.social, formerly the editor of Canvas, is now editing it – and it's returning in print at the end of November. Good news all round!

Application submitted. Momentum is already building with positive feedback to the project coming from government agencies, organisations and prominent individuals whom I greatly respect. Humbled.

Time to get serious writing a funding application for 'A Military History of New Zealand' — the first single-volume history of New Zealand's wars across more than 200 years, set in the context of the development of society and the impact of war on New Zealand and New Zealanders. #MilitaryHistory

I got an advance copy of Craig Robertson's Chris Knox biography 'Not Given Lightly', read it in three days and *really* wanted to write about it. Happily, North & South wanted an online review. (Paywalled, but you can just do a one-week free trial) northandsouth.co.nz/2025/10/09/n...

I said I'd write a few words about Craig Robertson's much-anticipated Chris Knox bio, which I love.

These are personal reflections on what will likely be the definitive history of a man who changed indie/alt music globally

'Cause, when it all comes down to dust
Can I say that Craig Robertson's bio of Chris Knox is anticipated? It is, and it's arrived.

As a teenager in the 80s entering the aerobics scene I fell hard for the sun beds during the Dunedin winters and then when I became a group fitness instructor sun beds were a employee perk at Les Mills World of Fitness! Lycra, bronze and bata bullets! 🤦

That's right search 'Historians' in this Manatu Taonga Ministry for Culture and Heritage document and its returns no results because after 80+ years they're going! Historians matter but not to this government. #HistoryMatters #DontWantToPickYourGhostKumara www.mch.govt.nz/sites/defaul...

The City to Sea Bridge (1993) marks not only the foundational legacy of Māori architect Rewi Thompson but is a marker of a transformational epoch in the history of Wellington when its citizens dreamed and delivered “the coolest little capital in the world”. www.rnz.co.nz/news/te-manu...
The City to Sea Bridge and the legacy of trailblazing Māori architect Rewi Thompson
The fate of the bridge described as a turning point for Māori architecture has swung back and forth over the past few months.

This is what I expected to find in the collection of a keen photographer living in Dunedin in the mid-1920s. The New Zealand and South Seas International Exhibition lit up at night on 1 May 1926 for Albert Percy Godber would have been like a moth to a flame. #LoganPark #Dunedin

Another Godbar panorama showing 'The Flat' 100 years ago. On the left Donaghy's rope walk next to Bathgate Park and in the centre Macandrew School surrounded by Chinese market gardens where today is found King's and Queen's High Schools. On the right the imposing Caversham Benevolent Institute.

Albert Percy Godber, his wife Laura and their daughter Phyllis outside their house at 9 Baker Street, Caversham, Dunedin ca. 1927. A carving in Maori style above the doorway was probably carved by Godber himself.
