Today I'm offering the complete bibliographical essay from the backmatter of "The First Tycoon" to assist historians working on the 19th-c United States.

What I describe could not be done by AI. It's not just reading undigitized pages. It's judgment, interpretation, consultation—all creative acts.
I had the rare experience of writing a "definitive" biography—the first thorough book on a major historical figure. I added a bibliographical essay to "The First Tycoon" to aid future historians and biographers. It explains my methods, assesses other works, & names key archives. I offer it here.

fight vs fold
VA Gov. Spanberger (moderate, was in CIA) and NYC Mayor Mamdani (left, is in DSA) both taking steps to block local law enforcement from helping ICE as it violently violates people's rights is a good example of how the relevant divide in the Dem coalition isn't center-left, it's fight-don't fight.

Not a bug but a feature.
“According to reports, ICE leadership believes that a congressional mandate requiring agents to unmask and display identification could lead to roughly 80% of agents resigning due to concerns over long-term personal and social repercussions.”

Bummer.

Anyway.

Ravioli for dinner.

“They’re close enough to the age of consent that a lot of people probably thought it was okay to hit on them". Bullshit. Young adult guys in the 70s referred to underage teens as “jailbait” because they were unquestionably off limits. They still are and always have been.
This level of apologia (from Megan McArdle in a podcast with Josh Barro and Ross Douthat) is fucking appalling. Idk what else there is to say.

No, this is how toxic douchebags behave
Yale prof David Gelernter defends his letter urging Epstein to hire "v small goodlooking blonde" student by saying that he was "keep[ing] the potential boss's habits in mind."

This creep shouldn't be allowed anywhere near students.

I think one thing people outside Minnesota don't understand is that after Good and Pretti were killed by feds while observing, the most normal people you could imagine have made peace with the fact that they could be next, and they are still out there because they say it's the right thing to do.
“If I am killed doing this, throw my body at the White House, martyr the shit out of me & raise hell. Do not be sad. Do not think I would do anything differently. I would do it over & over again — this is too important to sit down & shut up and not do anything.” www.mprnews.org/story/2026/0...

I have sometimes been accused of being overly judgmental for cutting out people who have done or said things I consider inexcusable. But seeing the people who hung out with Jeffrey Epstein post-conviction and now claim to regret it, I think there's something to be said for my approach.
