I had to laugh at this because you can tell he really wanted to hate the band but couldn't bring himself to do it lol

THE BEATLES ANTHOLOGY is getting re-released this week, and to celebrate I wrote about one of my favorite subjects: music documentaries. Having watched a ton and helped to make a few, I tried to figure out what makes a good music doc good.

Minnesota hasn't struggled like that in Green Bay since The Replacements attempted to cover "Theme From Shaft" at the City Center Theatre in 1991.

Listening to a lot of Neal Casal lately, both his own records and his excellent work with bands (The Cardinals, Chris Robinson Brotherhood, Hard Working Americans). One of my favorite contemporary musicians. Feeling sad again he died so young.

Anyone who makes albums lists should feel a bit seen with that formula...

(although truthfully, I'd hope folks grow out of it after the first decade of making year-end lists)

(then I remember the average # of years someone writes professionally about music is about five, so the cycle continues...)

Although I'm not much of a list maker (or consumer) anymore, Steven's always great, and this piece is worth it just for the "The formula goes like this" section.

@stevenhyden.bsky.social had a good write up about the problem with Welles. One worrisome thing among many, he’s been pretty coy about who he voted for in 2024
The (Bland) Ballad Of Jesse Welles
Also: A great new Wednesday album and some good heartland rock from Brian Dunne

RIP Todd Snider. One of the greats, an unheralded songwriters' songwriter and a genuine character. Loved and proselytized for almost as long as I've been a music critic. A guy not only influenced by Prine/Kristofferson/Jerry Jeff but he seemed to come out of the same world.
