9 Oct 1969, for the 1st time in the history of the show, the BBC’s Top Of The Pops producers refused to air the No. 1 song, ‘Je T’aime... Moi Non Plus’, the erotic French language love song by Serge Gainsbourg & Jane Birkin. The song had the voices of Gainsbourg and Birkin apparently making love.

9 Oct 1976, The #SexPistols signed to EMI records for £40,000. The contract was terminated 3 months later with the label stopping production of the 'Anarchy In The UK' single. EMI later issued a statement saying it felt unable to promote The Sex Pistols records in view of their adverse publicity.

9 Oct 1978, Belgian singer-songwriter Jacques Brel died of cancer, aged just 49. Artists who recorded his songs included, Ray Charles, Scott Walker, Alex Harvey, Frank Sinatra, Dusty Springfield, David Bowie, Nina Simone and Terry Jacks. Bowie recorded his famous "Amsterdam" track. #JacquesBrel

Born 8 Oct 1932, Ray Reardon was a Welsh snooker player who dominated the sport in the 1970s, winning the World Snooker Championship 6 times & claiming more than a dozen other titles. Until his mid-30s he worked as a coal miner then a police officer while playing snooker as an amateur. #RayReardon

Released 8 Oct 1971, In Search Of Space by #Hawkwind. The band started recording the album at George Martin's AIR Studios but after a week, the engineers were said to be reluctant to work with the band after friends of the band broke into George Martin's drinks cabinet & pinched all his booze.

8th October 1977, one half of TV cop show "Starsky & Hutch", David Soul was at No.1 on the UK singles chart with 'Silver Lady', his second and last UK No.1 single. A confirmed Anglophile, David moved here in the mid 90s & married a Brit in 2010 (Helen Snell). He died in 2024, aged 80. #DavidSoul

Born 8 Oct 1948 - Johnny Ramone, (John Cummings) guitarist from US punk rock band, Ramones who had the 1977 hit single 'Sheena Is A Punk Rocker'. They are often cited as the first band to define the punk rock sound. Cummings died of prostate cancer in Sept 2004. #JohnnyRamone
