in a stark red scene, my FFXIV OC; Yorimitsu, an othardian roegadyn man with a bald head and thick beard, stands in a pose of practiced strength and balance. He is shirtless but still is wearing a white hakama. His muscular torso has been pierced by two arrows and a dagger but his face shows no sign of pain, only a downturned expression of hesitation. Behind him, a massive creature with glowing red eyes and a gaping maw is about to bite down on Yorimitsu. Past them, a Hingashi hyuran woman, equipped with Hingashi samurai armor and a yumi bow, stands away. Her head and neck are unnaturally turned towards Yorimitsu revealing the blood streaming down her nose and mouth and her eyes now rolled back. ----- Yorimitsu's first love was Shuten. Her yumi had served their lord well, be it against invading forces or during the spring hunts. Yorimitsu, her senior, was grateful for her devotion and constancy, but Shuten was a joyful woman who quickly won his heart. He could never forgive the haughty laughter in the night. The raucous taunting behind a closed door. The priests said the kami and their lesser kin were beyond man's understanding. To see us as even worth toying with would already prove one's arrogance. But why then did they force his hand? Why must one blood be spilled to save another's? To imagine that this twisted fate was happenstance while the gods remained silent was far crueler to Yorimitsu. He tried to remember her drunken prattling at the end of the expeditions. How the men nor children fawned over Shuten's unbothered demeanor. But he could not even remember the quiet nights where they tended to each other's wounds. His blood pulsed from where the arrows met his body. The fletching looked familiar. He could still recognize the care and skill these arrows were given. Still? How long had he been standing here? The sun was bearing down on his body. He could feel its weight imposing on him.
