🧵🚨

The UK’s independent scientific bodies are highly vulnerable to politicisation - over the past 5 months I've been working with @martinmckee.bsky.social to map out their vulnerabilities and it's not good news.

Today our report is published!

I am in Wales! Land of my fathers. Well one grandmother actually, but that will do.

I mean, I'm not a cricket fan, really; though having been to Lords I do get it. But, they have baseball, the most pointless game in the history of sport. Like rounders but much less fun 😜

Generally more pleasant environment on the trains than we have. And when they work - brilliant. But when they go wrong, goodness they go big.

That is the universe' way of letting you know you should really just stay in Chester. I mean, why would you want to leave (popped for a visit a couple of weeks ago - actually made me homesick).

Dear Matalan, back to school adverts in the first half of the summer holidays are unconscionable; deciding to air them before the holiday starts is the sign of a depraved mind

It is a hard time to be someone who is not a fan of Oasis. I wish those who are joy, but am a bit sick of the obsessive coverage on the radio.

The combined DRIIVE and FINESSE workshop has ended at BAS. Two days of fascinating science and planning for future ionospheric campaigns with EISCAT. Great to see brilliant colleagues.

@jim-wild.bsky.social went on linkedin to post that BAS SWA is accepting expressions of interest for ERFs and the first post I saw was yours 🤣. Now it will look as if I was copying.

This is how your post appeared in my timeline. Clearly a coincidence and absolutely not reflective of reality. 😁

Second bit of travel in two weeks. Off to the EISCAT_3D users meeting. Then I am done for the year, I think.

I presented my work yesterday showing some results connected to two big NERC funded projects looking at ionospheric variability and ways to use observations to find pathways to improve our models of the middle atmosphere. #EGU25

Great to be back in Vienna for the EGU General Assembly. One of my favourite meetings, not least for the breadth of science on display.

Don't leave Brussels until 12.30ish. 50 min switch in Frankfurt. Getting to Vienna around 23.05 all things being equal.

Proper journey to EGU has begun. Eurostar to Brussels, gorgeous weather outside. #EGU25

Did you do all the lovely museums, parks and cafes? Od did you just say 'sack it' and hit all the questionable bars in the 'Bermuda Triangle', which is where I will be loitering each night after my conference this week.
