Red-tailed or Turkestan shrike
Dunwich, Suffolk, 05/10/2025
It seems very settled. Hunting bees and storing them in a gorse bush larder.

Turkestan shrike
Dunwich, Suffolk 02/10/2025
My out for three shrikes week just went to four, when this Turkestan / red-tailed shrike was found, a short walk from Minsmere, where I was birding today.

A fun afternoon in primary school: owls got new names—Tawny was crowned the Invisible Owl, LEO became the Bunny Owl 🐰🦉. After much debate (and giggles), the final poll crowned the Barn Owl as the kids’ favourite. Democracy in action, feathered edition!

Thanks to one of our brilliant Barn Owl people for this gem — adult owl checking out its old nest box. ✨Young have flown, house is empty, and it looks like they’re moving back in for the winter. ❄️ A true case of ‘returning to the nest’ 🦉 @suffolkbirdgroup.bsky.social

Pied flycatcher
Southwold 25/09/2025
No sign of the two yellow-browed warblers, after a morning sea watch, but good to find a pied flycatcher in the same area.

🦉 Good news — in the next few weeks we’ll be swooping into a couple of primary schools to chat all things Barn Owls! Feathers, pellets & a bit of owl magic coming to the classroom… wish us luck with the small humans! ✨ @suffolkbirdgroup.bsky.social

The #bird was fly catching this morning, showing superb aerobatic skills. Something I have never seen before from this species; only “clumsy” berry eating.

The more usual feeding behaviour. Still there today, but better in the morning, when it starts feeding - after which it can be elusive.

Six shiny new barn owl boxes are flying the nest today, off to their new homes thanks to our brilliant band of volunteers. Not sure if the owls requested ensuite facilities, but we’ve done our best! 🦉🏡 @suffolkbirdgroup.bsky.social

@suffolkbirdgroup.bsky.social @birdtrack.bsky.social a morning double twitch (2 UK lifers) on 24/08/25. Warblerswick for the Zitting Cisticolas, several displaying song flights from the male & another preening seen in the reeds. RSPB Boyton for the juvenile Black Stork feeding in the borrowdyke.
Juvenile Black Stork, RSPB Boyton feeding in the borrowdyke Juvenile male kestrel on the seawall, RSPB Boyton The red pin is the RSPB Boyton car park & the blue dot is the black stork's location. It's 0.8 miles as the crow flies but a 1.75 mile walk for the rest of us! However, there was plenty of bird life (bearded tits, water rails, curlews, sandwich terns, avocets. Common sandpipers, buzzards & wheat) to see & stop it turning into a march! A hardly cropped, close up of the juvenile Black Stork feeding in the borrowdyke, RSPB Boyton
